This might sound like a dumb question but how come I can't find the Original Age of Empires on steam or GOG? They have the other age of empires games on steam but I can't find the original from 20 years ago anywhere. I enjoyed that game as a child a lot (even though I was like 5 years old and terrible at it) And I was just wondering if anyone knows why it hasn't been put on either steam or GOG yet.

Probably something to do with microsoft if I had to guess, but no clue myself.
here's the community wishlist item for it.

If you look at how many of the most voted games on the wishlist have actually been completed, it's probably worth voting. :)
Ah, Age Of Empires, the original, and still the best. I still play this all the time.

You can get it here and it's 100% DRM-free, and so far has worked on every Windows version I've ever loaded it on (XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 10, which is what I'm currently using).

Once you install it, there is NO disc check, or any other DRM. It's DRM-free legitimately. And it is still the best of them all.

Even better if you use unofficial, HD patch:

I am a purist and prefer unmodded versions of games, but I cannot recommend this HD mod enough.

Is multiplayer in AoE1 working fine?(lan)

I tried multiplayer over lan with my friends 3-4 years ago but connection was always dropped after few hours and I'm sure our connection didn't had any problems because other games was fine.

By the way I don't remember they were drm-free, my version of "aoe 1" have cd key. This ones don't have cd keys?

No keys, No cd check. I installed it on my computer, took the disc out, and have been playing it ever since.

Oh, and to the poster above, yeah, I have the HD patch too. It is great.

Now the original boxed version of the game I purchased in the 1990's had a CD key you had to enter after you installed it. But that one I could never get to install on the newer OS's. This one that I purchased in 2012 has no DRM and it has installed and played fine on Win XP, Win Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 10. (I've never used Windows 8, but I guess given the above it would work on that too but can't verify it for sure.)

I prefer AoE1 too, mostly because I like the setting. AoE2 has guns and cannons which I feel ruin the medieval setting.

Is the "corrupted save games" bug fixed in that version (of AoE + expansion)?

IIRC, the bug was that if you saved the game when there were missile weapons fired in the game, then that save game, and any save games after that, would be corrupted and fail to load. So you had to be very careful not to save the game until things were quiet and there were no battles taking place (at least with missile weapons involved).

Yeah I love AoE too, even more than AoE2.
It would be amazing to have the original AoE on GOG! I dedicated countless hours of my childhood to this game, so it would be a very welcome addition. The campaigns were very fun (I have fond memories of the Syracuse scenario with the mirror towers).

I also wish Microsoft went ahead and decided to remake it to meet the modern standards in strategy games (for example, the original didn't have gates in the walls). But that's another battle...

No, I still issues saving the game. However, the HD patch (link above) claims to have fixed it. I haven't even tried saving as over the years I just got used to not saving, albeit when I first got this version I did try and ended up with saves that wouldn't load.
What I remember the most about AOE is spawning in a bunch of those laser guys. The nuke guy was mighty indeed, but he was so slow to reload and use.

^ I can confirm this. The "Collectors Edition" (AoE 1+2 plus expansions) on DVD-ROM (not older CD-ROM) is DRM-free. After installation, the disc isn't needed and no-online DRM unlike Steam Extended versions. You might as well buy it as given how Microsoft are obsessed with selling everything through their own store-front, you'll probably still be waiting for a GOG version in 2027...
Current team of AoEHD and AoMHD were hired from the community and are the people who made the new stuff possible. Ie the mod-team turned studio called Forgotten Empires. The reason they still don't do AoE1 is anyon'es guess though, since MS can't fail with it, seeing how both the others still suffer from bugs years after release and are still top sellers regularly during sales.

Just a quick question, I was wondering about purchasing age of empires package, as I only own AoE1. Could you advise if the DRM free edition you have, is the Ubisoft Exclusive one?
