Ok, so I kinda read your posts but I'm kinda tired and a little bit drunk on good red wine....but here's my take on quantum mechanics and spooky action...ready?

Ok, so I was unhappily married for many years. That was my steady state.

I began to realize exactly what kind of person would make me truly happy so I made a list (it was in three parts)

I visualized meeting the person that would make me happy and being in a happy state because my current state made me so unhappy.

I got divorced due to the above unhappy state.

I met the person that fulfilled my criteria.

I am happy and after seven years continue to be extremely happy.

Spooky action? Quantum mechanics? Sheer and utter will-power to accept nothing except the criteria that would meet my specifications? You choose ;-p

Not in for any game due to my happy state ;-D However I would dearly love to read that my experience jibs with your research.... I am a great believer in the power of the human brain to create its own reality...truly we as human beings are given a phenomenal gift that far too many of us under-utilize.
Congrats on being published! I see Quantum is trending now, but seems a bit complicated to me.

Here's my list in order of preference:

Droid Assault
Major Mayhem
FootLOL: Epic Fail League
Project Temporality
Subject 9
Blocks That Matter
Thomas Was Alone
Sugar Cube: Bittersweet Factory
Luna Shattered Hearts - Episode 1
Fly'n

Thanks for the quantic chance and good luck all!

Your attention! I forgot to mention one more important rule but now it's there and I'll post it here too:

6) At any time you can change your list, especially when games from it will be given to other people. Please note that the more games you win the smaller are your chances to win another one so at some point, even if you have a fresh list, you won't win anything.

I'll run the first quantum experiment to determine some winners in ~12 hours :D

misteryo: I like it! I am not in for this one. I just won your last giveaway plus a couple others. I am brimming with winnings and just want to play some games!

However, I am intrigued and will give some thought to creating my own quantum bet. There are things I really want to happen and things I would rather not do right now. I just have to think through how I may connect them...

Thanks!
I should have included a note "Please don't do that at home" :D Keep in mind that it's not that easy, I just gave you a rough idea of how a quantum bet works. It may happen that quantum buzz your mind creates will change the reality in such a way you don't want! The key is to know your mind (a lot depends on that) and to choose a very suitable quantum bet. It's not that every quantum bet will grand your wishes ;)

Getcomposted: "Publish or die" is so apt in the scientific world. Will you be the principal author? Congratulations!
Yes :D

Ghorpm: I can't give you any details because the agreement is not official yet but it's about new materials (so called high-k material) for memory devices.
avatar
jdsgn: Can you distribute me a copy of it once it's official?
Btw you good with Higgs stuff?
I suppose but it will still take some time before it happens.
Elementary particles is definitely not my field. Sure, I know something, usually a bit more then most non-physicists but no detailed knowledge.

thiagovscoelho: What weird ideas! What do you think are the benefits/fun in taking quantum bets exactly though? It's still a neat concept. Someone could make a board game around that!
It's just for fun :D As I said earlier I'm still certain it doesn't work like that. But I may tell you how we made it (5 people were involved). Usually once per week each of us has to perform a maintenance duty - you have to seat in front of a computer (without Internet!) and check if the lab is fine. Running a single test usually takes ~15 minutes and your attention is not really required during that. But you can't do anything productive so we placed a huge notebook there and we write some silly stuff that others will read when they will be here next day. We read it and expand it, everything just for fun. And that's how a quantum bet theory was created ;)

IronArcturus: Quantum Theory has always been interesting to me, but it's very difficult to follow. Do you have any diagrams of the project you've been working on that we could see?
Not really, sorry. And actually my project doesn't not involve much of a quantum mechanics, it's rather solid state physics. This whole quantum bet was created when we were bored (see above for explanations)
avatar
Lifthrasil: and if you want I would also be interested in more details of your whacky theories (what are the criteria for a quantum bet to be well crafted etc.) I like whacky theories. (I'm a physicist too, after all)
See above for how this theory was created. The thing is our theory was not general but very specific. We assumed that a human mind (as a tool) takes a major part in it so each quantum bet was strictly personalized for a given scientist. I would rather not share it because it was full of private stuff concerning my friends and myself ;)

Nice idea and nice giveaway. I wanted to reciprocate by making a bet like "if 'Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines' arrives on GOG within a month I'll make a giveaway of it", but that won't even pass rule 1, so I'm stumped.

Yes, I too think that we still know next to nothing about our brains and what they can actually accomplish. Definitely it doesn't work like this whole quantum bet, that was just a joke but there must be something in our mind that we still don't understand. And we can make things happen exactly how we wished for!

I'm happy that you are happy :D
Not in, but congratulations on your work! I aspire to become a scientific researcher myself, so I look to you for inspiration! Thanks so much for the giveaway. +1 :)
Thank you Ghorpm for this enormous giveaway. I'm in for
-Darkstone
-eXperience 112
-Dragonsphere
-Imagine Me
-Knytt Underground
-Skyward Collapse
-The Sun at Night

Congratulations on getting published! It's the most rewarding thing I know of (besides winning a prize for your article.......) I read your entire first post and (surprisingly) I understood everything! Actually, it makes more sense than the moto "If you Really believe in something it will become true". It's more like the law of equivalent exchange.
If I were to make a quantum bet it would be like: "If in the next 3 months I happen to find a piece of land suitable for my own home, I will work harder in my work, even though it pays less"

Good for you that you changed your life and found happiness. I think that when you know what you want, that makes life easier. Sure, you still need luck, but at least you'll gravitate towards the things which are best for you. Of course it helps if the conditions you set are actually good ones. For example my main criteria for someone to be with were that she'd be kind and gentle, and within these parameters it's more difficult to go terribly wrong.

As for affecting the world around you, I feel that it's the other way round, that our mind is more sensitive than we're aware of, and for example Ghorpm's quantum bet could have come up in his mind because he was aware at some level that there's a chance for it to happen soon, rather than that it happened because he wanted it.
I'm in for Phandom above me. Thanks Ghorpm and congrats. Maybe we have a future Nobel Prize among us :D

My personal opinion is that both effects may be true. We already have a lot of theories and hypothesis about dark energy and dark matter and there is no reason why there shouldn't be more, presently unknown influences. As I've said earlier our brains are still a mystery for us so it may happen that we can emit and detect some unknown waves. In my own example there are two possibilities:
- I wanted to publish it so badly that I emitted a lot of those unknown waves and the guy who was taking this decision detected those waves and subconsciously decided to let it go because it was so important for me (changing the reality)
- He made this decision already and emitted unknown waves that I detected so on subconscious level I already knew that it would happen (superior awareness of our brain)
- Any superposition of those two effects.
Now, I don't say it's like that, I merely accept such a possibility. The problem is that telepathy (and that would be more or less that) is so prone to fraud that scientist are often afraid to work on it because they will be kick out from the science community and proclaimed to be crazy. And that's pretty sad. A lot of people already think that I'm not behaving professionally just because I accept such a possibility ;) But no, I don't make any research in that matter, my biology knowledge is very, very limited and you can't do anything without it in that matter ;)
I´ve read through that post and I´m in for Astebreed!
Anyways, I got a question:

If I can effectively remove general starving in the world I won´t eat anything for 40 days...
If I can ban torture in the world I´d agree on beeing tortured for a day!
...
Could those be GENERAL quantum bets for everybody who isn´t sure whether to live egoistic or altruistic?

Anyways, my personal bet:
If I get DeepSilver to the point that they release Metro Redux DRM-free on GOG I would do a TrippleMetroReduxGA! (although I really don´t wanna spend 120$ on a GA...)

Edit: Oh my got, I did it, it really feels totally strange! I want it to happen but at the same time I really don´t wanna spend that much money. ARRRRGH!

Good analysis, but I don't know if "unknown waves" are necessary in it. It would highly depend on the relationship between you two. If you hardly know each other and don't meet often, you never talked to him about publication and nobody else you talked with about this had a chance to pass this to him, then the "unknown waves" theory might have some merit. It's hard for me to judge based on the limited information available.

Those are not really quantum bets. Sure, you may want and don't want those to happen at the same time but condition A should have a possibility to make action B more tolerable in future. in your case the effect is rather immediate - starving/being tortured is not that bad if you know that you are the very last person who suffers from it. Being happy for having a game here will make it easier to create a giveaway immediately after the game gets released. So you fulfilled want/don't want condition but you are not taking any risk and it ruins the bet and can't change the reality. Why? Because your quantum state of wanting/not wanting is static.

Let's take a look at my initial example: If they invite me for a job interview I'll give 1000$ to the charity. I want to be invited and don't want to spend 1000$. But then I think: I will have a new job so I will afford it! And it changes me: I want this to happen more then I don't want to. Then I think: what the heck, with a new job I may even donate more, I'll help others! And I wanted it even more then before! But then I get scared: what if I don't get a job but will have to pay anyway? And then the situation changes: I don't want it more then I wish for it! Then I think: what if I get homeless because of carelessly spend money? And then I really, really don't want it to happen! But then I think to myself: calm down dude, you know this institute, if you get invited you have a very good chance to be hired. And so again I want it more to happen. And so it continues...

This way not only I want and don't want something to happen simultaneously but I create a fluctuation of amplitudes of wanting/not wanting. Only that makes a quantum buzz that can change the reality. But unfortunately it's not that easy ;) In our theory we assumed that a quantum bet has to be well adjusted to your own mind because a lot depends on a tool used for the experiment (and a brain is such a tool). For example if you take a bet just like mine it would be possible that you would change the reality other way around - so that those research would remain confidential forever. Just because your mind is different then mine and quantum buzz can change the reality in both ways. The trick is to adjust the quantum bet to your own mind so that something will happen exactly the way you want it ;)

I've just called it "unknown waves" as a working title but it can be anything really ;)

In this case I don't know him personally and the only thing he got from me was an official application form. But of course he could ask others about that matter. It's a pure speculation from my side and fun I have with this whole quantum bet theory. Nothing really serious ;P
