If you leave it solely in the hands of the customers, they are bound to f*** it up. Steam Greenlite as a good reference :P Good idea in principle, then it gets warped. Same with Steam Early Access (also good in principle, but not utilized properly)...
Let's not forget sometimes games (and movies) can put up very convincing footage or screenshots for you want/get a game, only to get into it and realize it was utter crap (or you got bored out of your mind 5 minutes in).
