qwixter: From a couple of reports I have seen on the process, Oscars are more political based than merit based.

Breja: I'm pretty sure there was one episode of X-FIles in which we learned it's the Cigarette Smoking Man who really picks the winners.
Having watched many episodes of the show, I can't even tell if you're joking or not. it was the 90s after all.

Breja: Born on the Fourth of July (obviously, that's the big one), A Few Good Men, Collateral, Valkyrie, Tropic Thunder and, of course, TOP GUN.
Meh. I'm not saying he is a bad actor, mind you, I'm just not really a fan of is acting.

DiCaprio, on the other hand, grew on me. I wasn't a fan of him in the beginning either, but he's turned into a fine actor.

I'm serious. I think it was the episode where we learned his backstory, and near the end, again in the present day, we see him in a meeting with some of his lackeys, and at the end one of them says something like "the Oscars are coming up, do you have any favourites sir?"

Lydon: I’m working on next month’s Oscar nominations. Any preference?
Cigarette-Smoking Man: I couldn’t care less. What I don’t want to see is the Bills winning the Super Bowl. As long as I’m alive, that doesn’t happen.
Jones: That’ll be tough, sir. Buffalo wants it bad.

He's acting the same in everyone except Tropic.

Les is just the character he puts on when he's hyping scientology.
I'm happy for these winners:

Mad Max: Fury Road (6 awards, amazing)
Ennio Morricone
Leonardo DiCaprio
Brie Larson

Collateral is way way different from anything Cruse has done. Still can't say he doesn't play himself in most movies.

Lets not forget he's also been in a Kubrick movie, if he's good enough for Kubrick, he's good enough for me.

Matruchus: Star Wars definitely didn't deserve anything. Just a copy of A new Hope with a few new gimmicks and nothing else, hardly exciting since you could see the plot from the beginning.
I completely agree with you. I can't understand why so many people praise it so much. How can a copy of an old movie have such high ratings is beyond my comprehension.
Was so happy Leo finally got his Oscar, and they didn't cut him off or anything. <3 And I really liked the best supporting actor in "Bridge of Spies" and was so glad he won as well.

With all of this Oscar talk, it just reminds me of that time "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" just kept winning all the Oscars. And they really deserved it, and it's the only fantasy to have gotten Best Picture. And in the same vein that you were happy that Star Wars didn't win any, I was happy that The Hobbit didn't win as many because it's just a rehatch for money, and not as much love imho.
Spotlight, wat?

That's the one Kubrick movie I have not seen. Perhaps I'll have a change of mind when I see it.
88th Academy Awards. Hmmm...

88 is alpha-numeric code for 'Heil Hitler.' Just sayin'... there's something funny going on here.

darthspudius: Ennio Morricone finally won I see. Now that is some form of blasphemy. That deserved a win well before now.

Tannath: True. Though, per usual, they ignored him before when he deserved it and now gave it to him for a "not as impressive" effort. Still, better late than ever. Congrats mister Morricone.
It is an embarrassment to be honest. Is his score that ordinary?

No, it's good. But there's only 50 minutes of it, and considering some his older work, this being his one Oscar score is indeed a bit embarrassing. Not for him, mind you, but to those Academy boneheads. ;)

I'll have to check it out. I do enjoy his stuff.
