When I launch the game in windows 8, I see the menu screen but the buttons have no text. Blindly going deeper into the game still shows a lack of text anywhere. I have tried other solutions for windows 7 problems, but they don't seem to work for windows 8. Anyone have a solution or the same problem?

I see the exact same problem and I also have tried every solution mentioned....no luck.
yeah I'm having exactly the same issue. Even if you muddle through the start screens without the text ( I played this game so much when I was younger that I could almost remember the layout of the menus) the game itself is still unplayable. The mouse warps around the screen, the graphics are buggy. Its such a shame, I was so excited about playing this again
I've just got Gangsters as I used to play it a while back but it looks like I'm getting the same issue on Windows 8. I believe it's related to DirectX, specifically direct draw but I'm struggling to get around it. Any one had any ideas?
Go here: http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/3269/t1480728-windows-7-gangsters/

Jump down to "Windows 7 & Gangsters" and skip the first update as I believe it's official so the release should already have it.

Then install the XP patch in the second link, follow the explorer fix with a bat.

I would also add XP compatibility, disable themes/desktop composition and adding admin rights to the new gangsters.exe.
I can confirm that this does not work. The same problem persists.

I just want to say I am also experiencing this issue. The game is nigh-on-unplayable.

You can get the text in the menu buttons to show up by selecting one, then clicking and holding the mouse button on the previous box. This also works for selectable scenarios like in the Tutorial screen.

The game seems to run a little better in 640 x 480 but it's still unbearable. Any resolution higher than that (. 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768) causes the game to stutter constantly whenever you interact with the map view in the organizer. The only way to stop this is to go to another tab like Options.

Very disappointed! I only played the demo version of this when I was a kid so I was excited, having been delayed by about 15 years, to finally complete the game. So fix it, please. For me, this is Unfinished Business!

Done it all, doesn't seem to work in Windows 8. Can you confirm you managed to achieve it on this system?

I can't, I don't have the GOG version of this game and not Windows 8, I just came by that link by accident when I was searching for a fix in Windows 7.

Ah right, well thanks anyway. :)
Also having the same issue.

A waste of money. Gutted.
And one more...i've the same issue. No Text in Menus & so on...
I got this from GOG support:

I'm afraid that Windows 8 is not supported in this game. Windows 8 was released after the game's initial GOG release, and we weren't able to make the game work reliably on the new system. Because of this Windows 8 is not listed among the compatible systems. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Do you have access to a different PC that had Windows XP, Vista or 7 installed, and meets the game's minimal requirements?

Damn, guys...
That sucks. I just bought this game and have no access to a Win 7 or XP box. Anyone had any luck with a VM?
So does this mean we will never be able to play it on a Windows 8 machine?

I don't have access to any other version of Windows, let alone another machine with that OS.

Am I, therefore, entitled to a refund?
