Many are recommending Freespace 2 Open Mod to play Freespace 2.

But it requires Java to install, but I'm not keen on installing Java to my system.

Is there a way to just add modern resolutions to the original game?

Any ideas? Or is there a way to install the mod without Java?

Thank you in advance.

Edit: Installed the game, in the launcher it says "No 3d acceleration". Detect does nothing. If I use other ways to start the game it crashes a second after I launched it.

To answer your first question: Java is only needed for the automatic installer. You can install it manually by following the readme and downloading everything manually.

AFAIK there are several launchers. Which one do you use? Can you post a screenshot?

Edit: Did you find the hard-light.net wiki? http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Make sure it's the right launcher, there should be one specific launcher for FS_open.

You can install everything manually, it can be a bit annoying (nothing complicated, just dump the right files in the right folders) but it can be done even without any particular knowledge.

Thank you!

I did the manual installation, with no problems. I then started the wxlauncher, and I can configure everything. But it prompts the error message "Mod not supported - your system does not support the minimum resolution needed to play this mod (640x480)." I tried the -res command line, but it didn't work. I looked online, but this error message doesn't seem to be encounted before.

Maybe my system is just too new, and this game (and the mod) too old.

Unless you have a good idea (which would be very nice) I guess I give up. I had plans for a while to built an old Win98 PC for games like these, so it would have to wait until then.

I play with a Radeon HD 7770 on an i5-3470, I don't think the system being "new" is a problem with Freespace Open, ask on the Hard Light Productions forum the guys there probably know what's up.

sounds to me like you're trying to launch the original exe. Can you make sure that you've selected the Freespace open 3.74 executable in the launcher?

Yes, I have. I tried fs2_open_3_7_4_SSE2.exe, it did not work.

It's ok, I have given up on this game until I get a retro machine for it. Until then I remember it fondly.

Still strange, I never encountered a compatibility problem with a gog game before, they are usually pretty easy to run on modern machines.

However, thank you very much for your response! It is appreciated!

BigBadBorg: (…)
The irony of this is that fs2_open will probably not work on a retro machine. I've no idea about the cause of your problem, but follow Det_Bullock's advice and ask for help on the Hard Light Productions forum.

Edit: Did you remove all exe files and dll files from the Freespace 2 directory before extracting the fs_open archive? You might have a stray dll file that causes trouble.

Retro machines aren't necessary (and more trouble than it's worth in this case), you probably did something wrong during the installation, and I reiterate:
ask the guys at HLP, even I got the installation wrong a couple of times.

Thanks, but I always wanted to build some old machines, like I had in the days. My 486 build is complete, and playing games like Commander Keen or Monkey Island on it is on a whole different level. So it's not that bad this game doesn't work, it's just a motivation to start working on my 98 machine.

Edit: I also forgot to mention that I always had small issues with my RX card. The driver didn't work properly, it randomly crashed from time to time. This is not ATI bashing, though I never had trouble with my nvidia cards. A few days back I did a minimum installation, just the driver, no control center, and my system is stable since then. So it's possible that the problem was because of the AMD control center/full driver installation.

I uninstalled Freespace, but I'll try again when I have the time. Maybe it works now.

Gameworks, AMD experience and all that garbage are useless and often create more problems than they're worth, I get the intention is good (allowing newbies to tune the card for individual games without dealing with weird-sounding options) but in the end they are a lot of flash with no substance that often is good only to generate new bugs.

There is no such thing as having a system too new for FSO. That error message is also not something FSO ever generates. It can be generated by wxLauncher... although if I'm reading the code right, it doesn't have anything to do with the mod, and it actually just means wxLauncher couldn't detect any supported resolutions for some reason. Try wxLauncher 0.12 RC2 and see if that works.

Thank you! I downloaded it and will try it in the next few days when I get the time! Thanks!
