I cant be that long, I think its about 2 years but thats just a guess from memory
Apparently I managed to finish Fallout 1 without ever knowing that there was a time limit until the mutant attack. I thought that after you found the water chip, the time limit was gone and you could take as long as you wanted to finish the rest of the game.

i guess it just shows that whatever the time limit is, it's plenty of time.
Ive never had any trouble with the time limit, ive found the chip sub 100 days and then went after the master and militry bases straight after,

i think after the water chip, the more time you take, the more locations the mutants attack and destroy. Might be wrong though.

The only mutants I ever saw were where you first meet them (finding the water chip), the military base, and with the master. But I could have just done everything fast enough that I never saw them attack any other locations.

There was a 500 day limit before in either patch 1.0 or 1.1 but this was removed in the latest official patch (1.2). There is still a 13 year limit introduced for technical reasons (which just gives a screen still with "THE END" written on it, If I'm not mistaken).

Yeah, In 500 days Its most likely possible to do everything In game twice quite comfortably.

Certain location get the "Razed by mutants ending" if you enter them after a certain amount of days have elapsed. But I remember only the Necropolis gets invaded by mutants In-game if you re-enter 30 days after killing the ones In the watershed, not certain If they do so else where.

Would recommend Per Jorners Ultimate Fallout guides for those who want to know more on fallout:

The mutant invasion had no relation with Water Chip quest except you could hasten the end by divulgin the location of Vault 13 to water merchants. In that case Vault 13 would've been invaded on day 400 instead of 500.

Here is the mutant invasion occupation timer info:
Day 90 - LA: Boneyard
Day 110 - Necropolis
Day 140 - Hub
Day 170 - Brotherhood of Steel
Day 200 - Junktown
Day 230 - Shady Sands
Day 400/500 - Vault 13

I remember there being bugs that prevented some of the later occupations from happening but TeamX has restored the invasion in full force in their Fallout Restoration Mod including fixing the invasion scripts so occupations actually occur in all cases.
