There was a promotion, which ended on 23rd of September. After first purchase they were giving redeem code which gave you a possibility to 'buy' one game from Interplay's catalog for free.

Not that big of a deal, figured it'd be helpful.
gog is where it's at. it's the little things that count, in this case.
My friend is trying out Fallout via Gametap and it from what I've seen, it doesn't run quite as smoothly (interface wise) as GOG.
The team at GOG has certainly put in the extra effort. Whether it is the extra features, or just the support/community they have put together a bunch of little but important pieces that makes all the difference. Impeccable service breeds loyal customers.

Thanks. It looks like my english needs more polishing :).
Quality of Game tap is sad, seems like they get the license and throw the game out there. And then there is the Background program...I like having the game in offline mode as well.
gametap = suck. no worthwhile support, the darn player/downloader wouldn't even load correctly for me. uninstalled/reinstalled four times, not worth the headache.

rgx: Gametap = only for North America :(

That is true in theory, but as it stands a great lot of people from all around the world can use it, nonetheless. I am in Germany and I was able to create a GameTap account without any tricking. As I've heard you don't even need that for playing the free games, it should be possible to log in as a guest.
Also GameTap is working flawlessly for me. The downloads are very fast, the software works as it should. So it offers a good opportunity to play some quality games for free.
But I also don't think that it is a great problem for GoG. Of course a lot of people who would have bought it here will now play it via GameTap and it's going to be the same on a lower scale with Second Sight. I also guess really owning the game instead of it being tied to another big software is an important factor. Obviously for many the mere $6 are worth that alone :) And then there's the support and GoG generally being more "sympathetic".
Don't worry :)

They may offer it as "free", but is that free as in "I can download it as many times as I want, back it up, and play it 10 years from now even if GameTap no longer exists?"
Or is it just a glorified rental?

It is part of an ad supported "rental" service. IT is free, but only while you have gametap installed. I used gametap for awhile and decided I'd rather own the games I play...which is awesome that GOG.com came along ;)

Same here.
So the blurb ought to read "Gametap is allowing free rentals of Fallout".
I definitely prefer owning a game than renting one - especially if it's a classic like Fallout or Giants: Citizen Kabuto.
I really hope people don't get confused. If I wasn't for GoG.com, I wouldn't have bought Fallout on GoG.com. I don't use gametap and have only been slightly interested in it, when I saw they had some console games. But yeah, by the definition you guys have I'm only renting HL2 and etc, because I can only run them as long as I have steam installed.. I can backup my game, I can deactivate my keys (AFAIK) and I can sell them to whoever I want, it's just you need steam to play.
Anyway, I was not defending Gametap in anyway, just defending steam.. it's not the best there is, I admit that, but it isn't Gametap either.
but yeah, I'm sorry if anyone got the misrepresentation that I was in favor of Gametap over GoG, then you were mistaken. I only linked to it, because it is related to this forum. And I'm certain the GoG staff would be interested in finding out what Gametap was offering, but it seems this thread has come to an end. All has been discovered.
I attempted to use Gametap a few months ago. I could play some of the basic, free games, but the good games (i.e. all of the games that I was interested in) were unavailable to me because I use a 64 bit OS (Vista Ultimate). As such, Gametap did not get a single penny from me.
Besides, I really prefer to own my games. As little time as I have to play, I always feel like I'm not getting my money's worth with a rental. (In the back of my mind, I'm always thinking: "if I play for X weeks, it's the same cost as if I'd just bought the game outright, but, after spending the money, I don't have anything to show for it, etc...) I suppose that's why my subscription with Gamefly didn't last very long.
