Hi,
I'm playing fallout 1 for the first time and installed all the mods from sticky mod thread. But it seems that I cannot stack items onto each other as described in the manual. I'm also unable to rearange items. Could anyone tell me how it's supposed to work?
thanks,

I don't think you can stack every type of item... but you can definitely stack ammo, medicine like stimpaks, caps (used like money) and a few other things. You won't be able to stack weapons, armor or other large items.

Thank you. Well the manual says

Quote:
"If you move COMPLETELY IDENTICAL items on to each other,
they will “stack”. Stacked items are a little more convenient. If you
have stacked items, a number will appear on the stack, showing the
number of items in the stack."

For example I have two Icons of the water container, both of them showing "3x", so I guess this is a stackable item, but it doesn't seem that I can drop one icon onto the other (resulting in "6x").

As for the rearangement of items, the manual says:

Quote:
"If you want to move an item up or down the list, simply pick it up
and drag it to it’s new location.
If you drag completely identical items on to each other, they will
stack. Weapons are only identical if they contain the same exact
amount of ammo, and the ammo itself is the same. Therefore, weapons
will not stack very often."

This also does not work for me. And finally I'm unable to put items into containers like back packs.

Tha manual says:
"Containers are a special kind of item that can store
items within themselves. A backpack, or a bag, would be a container.
Containers don’t let you carry more equipment than you can lift (your
carry weight), but they do let you organize items better.
You can drag items to the container from the main inventory list.
Simply drop the item on the container to add it to the container."

When I try to drop something onto a container or a different location the item just jumps back to its original place.

I guess it's not that important where some items are, but it would be conventient to sort them in some way.

Is this a known problem? Or is it a bug?
Hmm... not sure. I'm pretty sure I was able to put items into backpacks when I played, but that was a while ago on my old computer. I remember that weapons pretty much never stacked though.

Could it be that it just takes a while to register the click? When you grab an item it might be unclear where exactly the "cursor" is so you think you've dragged it somewhere but the game doesn't think you have and just drops it back where you started. This happened to me in Arcanum a lot where I would have to try several times to move items around. Don't remember about Fallout though.

It could be a bug though. Anyone else seen this behavior?
on interplay's Fallout 1 FAQ board, it says the container must be in your hand (in primary/secondary slots where gun/ammo usually is) and items can then be dragged out of inventory and put in the container. at least i think that's the idea -- here's the link:

http://www.nma-fallout.com/fallout1/official_site/faq.shtml

(this is the developers' site, they also have a Fallout support link, and you can e-mail queries directly)

I always found it more than effective to put the sack in another container, such as a locker; to Use the sack to open it; and then to start stuffing things in it. Then I'd click the icon of the sack (where the icon of the locker had been), which would take me back out of the bag and into the locker, where I could then drag and drop the bag back in my inventory.

If he can't do that, something's gone awry, I'd say.
Just dibbled into FO1 again after a great while, and you definitely can stack same type weapons... as long as you empty the clips first. Empty guns are considered similar and stackable. Fiddled around with a backpack but didn't see the point...
Backpacks are of dubious value. They're absurdly useful if you've picked out a locker or shelf you can regularly access in which to store stuff, since they're great organizing devices. However, they're almost purely an affectation when out and about, as they take up weight without giving you anything more than a peculiar kind of organizational convenience.
