hello, I start the game and then I get a black screen and an error (accompanied by the ding of failure) saying error initializing video mode 640x480...any help would be appreciated

Make sure it's set to a resolution other than 4:3

Could someone treat me like a complete n00b and explain exactly what to do from initial mod installation to renaming this ddraw thing please?
(I am pretty new not only to PC gaming but all this modding and patching malarky)
