I know it gets a ton of hate dumped on it for butchering the series.

But, I'm a long-time Baldur's Gate fan (got the original shortly after it came out and have played the trilogy umpteen times since) and I actually quite enjoyed the Dark Alliance games. The key is, I went into them with the expectation of it being a hack-and-slash action RPG. Never saw any tie-in with the PC games, and heck, for all intents and purposes, I never considered it a Baldur's Gate game at all. Because of that, I could enjoy it.

So it seems that BoS is a similar kind of game, so I'm asking: Is the game any good if you imagine that it's got nothing to do with the Fallout series? Like, is the reason it's hated on because it's not what Fallout is about, or because it's actually a bad game? If it's the first one, I can handle it. When I want Fallout, I can play Fallout, and BoS being a big departure from that isn't a big deal, to me. Like with Dark Alliance, I can mentally write that "Fallout" out of the title and just enjoy the game as "Brotherhood of Steel."

I started the game a few times but i really didn't have the strength to play the whole game.
Even if you take out the Fallout from the title it is still a horrible game.
But that is just my opinion.

S'truth. I've given it a whirl, and quite aside from its crude approach to a favorite canon, it's just not a very well made game in the first place. You could slap on any content and textures and it's still be crap.

I wouldn't advise playing this game, unless you want to laugh at how bad it is.

I'm quite shocked by the replies here. I think the game is quite fun. If you liked the fighting part in Fallout :) There are no quests here. I liked how they made CTB system (alternative to turn-based)) - it works pretty well.

But for me the key to enjoy it, is to ditch all of the squad members, turn on tough guy mode (no saves except in the bases).

I don't think most of us enjoyed fallout games for the fighting part, but for the quests, great story and atmosphere.
Sadly most of that is missing in BoS.

Sounds like you might be talking about Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, not the PS2 game Brotherhood of Steel.

Yeah, it's a little confusing. Normally, Fallout: Tactics: BoS is just called "Tactics," while the PS2 Fallout: BoS is just called "BoS," if it's referred to at all. It's a bad game, it's a bad member of the franchise, and it was one of the harbingers of Interplay's destruction. So most folks just try to act like it never happened.

I own it and BG: Dark Alliance.

I can honestly say it's a much worse game than Dark Alliance, the atmosphere isn't there either of DA or of FO in general. The combat gets worse because it's focussed on ranged rather than melee/spells. It tries emulating the humur of FO but it totally misses the mark and falls flat on its face.

I really enjoyed Dark Alliance, played it through several times with a friend after winning it in a game show. Bought FOBOS later on fully knowing what I was going into, just because I saw it for very cheap and I honestly never got very far in it because I just got fed up everytime I tried to play it.

That said it's playable, and if you really loved playing the ranger in Dark Alliance you might enjoy it a lot more than I did (I hated that class), but don't expect any intelligence of any sort from the game or anything deeper than the most shallow hack'n'slash you can imagine.

Get Tactics instead -- it is not the same type of game, but beats the living daylights out of the plain "BOS" anyday.

It (Tactics) was actually the first Fallout I ever played -- and the reason I got hooked to the series, no matter what people say about it sometimes.

Is it worth playing well...

If you really liked dark alliance and fallout it might be worth a look to at least see what they did with their fusion. It falls somewhere between mediocre dark alliance clone and so bad its good. There's some fun to be had with the title if you can excuse the fact that it doesn't meet the fallout of Dark alliance standards.

If nothing I've said has turned you off it and you're just interested in trying it out I can recommend buying it if you can find it cheap. I paid 15$ for a used xbox copy a couple years ago and having played it that's probably a bit much it doesn't really stand up well for what you could get for 10$ on gog for example. Skimming ebay on a lark there are some copies going for a reasonable 10$ but also some for 40$ or more and its REALLLLLY not worth that unless you have money to burn (in which case I'd send you towards the wasteland kickstarter :P ).

But still if you can find a copy for under 10$ and your interested go for it. Just don't expect the a mind blowing experience. Its never really manages to pass the rating of alright.

I.. halfway enjoyed it? It wasn't a great game by any stretch, and I didn't play it enough to beat it. But it wasn't too horrible. I'd say... $5 would be an ok price.
