A pre-note, I am using the Mac version.

So I got the Fallout package for the freebie and decided to download it. Now it downloads fine, installs fine, and even runs fine. Well, it runs fine if you discount the fact that the mouse movement is sluggish and the game runs very slow despite it not actually using up all of the resources.

My question is that can I do anything to fix this? I really want to be able to play it before I get my actual gaming computer set up (It doesn't require that kind of horsepower anyway).

And no, it's not a resource issue. I have already checked in to that.

Tankman101: (snip)
There were problems reported with the Mac OS X mouse acceleration.
Try setting the "Tracking speed" to the maximal possible level in Keyboard & Mouse preferences.

1. Enter "System Preferences" from you dock or Applications folder
2. Press "Keyboard & Mouse" option
3. Set "Tracking speed" under Mouse tab to the maximal possible level and launch the game
4. To revert the changes after play follow the steps again and set your tracking speed to desired level

Well there's one problem down, but the game is still running terrible slow.

Look for the f1_res.ini file, open it and set
GRAPHICS_MODE=1

This will tell the High Resolution patch to use DirectX7.
Nice but there's one problem with that, I'm not using the high-resolution patch.

I'm worried that using it on the Mac version will break the install.
Give it a try. Right now, it isn't running smoothly anyway. With the Hi Res Patch you can force a DirectX7 conform rendering which seems to run better in this case.
Ok so I downloaded the patch but figured out that I can't install it.

It requires me to run an exe (which Macs can't do) in order to install it. I might just have to deal with the slow frame-rate.

Yes, the recent version 4.1.5 comes with an exe-installer (the older one didn't).

But you can simply open the Fallout1_High_Resolution_Patch_4.1.5.exe with a file decompression software like 7zip
http://www.7-zip.org/download.html (there's also a Mac version).

Extract the content of the file to your Fallout installation. Unfortunately, you must also install the Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 Redistributable into the bottle where Fallout is installed, because the patch needs it.

Well thanks for the info about the extraction, didn't know I could do that.

Two final questions and then I'm out of your hair. How do I install the redistributable and where is the download for it (can't find it for the life of me ._.)

You have to put msvcp60.dll in .wine/drive_c/windows/system
I advice against downloading the DLL from dubious websites.
A save way to get it would be downloading Service Pack 6 for Visual Basic 6.0
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=9183
Open the file with a decompression software and extract vcredist.exe.
Now open vcredist.exe with the same software and extract msvcp60.dll. It should be the right version.

Hope it's worth the effort and the patch solves the slow frame rate ;-)
It did, thanks for your help! There's a little residual lag but it is now proportional to the actual computer and not slow for no reason.
Great! You're welcome and thanks for the feedback.
