I'm having the same problem. I've tried using the compatibility troubleshooter with zero luck. No idea what to do next

same problem too bad wanted to start with eu1 to learn how to play it i have 3 and 4 as well
Same problem for me too. It worked only a few weeks ago on windows 8 but does not load since I installed windows 10. I just noticed that the nvidia control panel lists europa.exe as being linked to the application Star Wars Starfighter if this is of any help.

Same thing here on Windows 10; europa.exe is active in the Task Manager, but the game won't display.

I know that's definitely not an answer to the question, but imho you should better go straight to 3 or 4 (probably 4, but I don't own it), don't see playing the different games in order as steps of a tutorial. EU3 brought many changes compared to the previous ones, you can have a much greater influence on the course of things there.

I own both 3 and 4 on steam and off course crusader kings 2, but those games are much bigger then 1, i tought if i buy the first one with all those extras so i generly could learn how to play it.
Just saying, but turning Directplay on in Windows features under Windows 10 Pro helped me get some older games running.

Pic related.

well since the the question cant be solved anymore, ill close this one.
Well, I suppose I should be happy with the rep bonus lol, but I don't think you should have closed this, because :

1) It's misleading for people coming on the forum that will think this thread contains a solution, and
2) Someone may find a solution later

I personnally don't see any problem with people reviving old threads, especially when they come with an answer :)

Btw, just some wild guesses, did you try to disable your anti-virus/anti-malware/anti-adware ? Did you try to run the game as a different user, possibly created for the occasion ?

Thanks for the reply, but I have returned the game to gog I didnt see that the game doesnt support windows 10. Well I did it this way because I cant solve it anymore since i dont own the game anymore.
I hear you... Looks like the transition to Windows 10 is not as smooth as Microsoft proclaims !

Some people say it's normal, compatibility can't be achieved with all previous systems and sooner or later a program will become "unrunnable"... I have to disagree with this. To make it short, there's no serious technical barrier : MS could even virtualise older systems if need be.

Thank you for the suggestion, but that does nothing to mitigate this issue. In fact the DirectPlay check mark was already ticked on my system.

I am in total agreement with this response. I checked this thread again because it was marked as solved when the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed.

Has anyone successfully played Europa Universalis 1 on Windows 10?...
