Had thoughts on buying it because I LOVED this game in the past, but, does Multiplayer not work?...

I just tried to play with my girlfriend over LAN, said CD key was in use by another player. I even tried purchasing another copy on a different account. I'd stay away for now
"NOTE: The game does not currently support multiplayer but we are working on resolving the issue."

Also you can check in the games gamecard
https://www.gog.com/game/empires_dawn_of_the_modern_world
If there is no "multiplayer" listed in the Features tab to the right there is no reason to expect it will work in game.

I found a method to change the cd key.

In regedit (windows key + r then type in regedit) look under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/SSSI/Empires and edit "GameSpy CD Key" then change only one Letter/Number from the original Value. When you relaunch the game it will prompt you to enter a cd key.

Presumably if you then enter your original cd key from the boxed copy it will be different to your friend and hopefully allow the multiplayer game to work.

edit: refined thanks to EifelTasse

Some games(like Call to Power II) Say the same thing, but with various tests I have made(with my own computer here, a Windows Vista in the living room and Windows Vista Laptop) Multiplayer worked just fine.

As long as LAN and/or DIrect Connect options were not removed when GOG was able to sell it, then multiplayer should work with little to no problems, but, computers being computers will sometimes not register.

Edit: I did check it before I asked this question, but my past experiences is what had me ask if LAN/Direct Connect were removed or not.

So does that mean online multiplayer works?

It´s been almost four months from this reply. I really want to buy the game, but only if I can play it on multiplayer. Is it working now?

My friends and me are using openvpn to play this game together. After changing the cd key, you can play in lan.
Look at post 4 for infos, how to change the key.
DO NOT FOLLOW THIS ADVICE!! MY GAME WOULD NOT LOAD UP AFTER I DID THIS AND I HAD TO UNINSTALL AND REINSTALL SEVERAL TIMES

I found a method to change the cd key.

In regedit (windows key + r then type in regedit) look under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/SSSI/Empires and edit "GameSpy CD Key" to any random value. When you relaunch the game it will prompt you to enter a cd key.

Presumably if you then enter your original cd key from the boxed copy it will be different to your friend and hopefully allow the multiplayer game to work.

I had the same issue that the game won't load after changing the "GameSpy CD Key" value. But I found a solution: You have to Change only one Letter/Nummer from the original Value. If you Change it to a complete new value the game won't start.
Waiting for MP patch.
