Hello everyone,

I've made a list of features I would like to change (or add) in New Horizons.

I'd like to hear what old timers and new comers have to say, and how they feel about these changes.

1) Let the player choose a hero's initial skill
=> Out of 2? Out of 3? Out of all?

2) Let the player choose a Scout's favorite terrain
=> Out of 2? Out of 3?

3) When a hero levels up, let the player choose the next skill from a pool of 3
=> Let him also choose between Health, Magic, Command?

4) Let the player choose a hero's level 10 skill from a pool of 3 skills
=> My Scouts always draw Looting 1 bleh!

5) When the player recruits a leveled up unit, let the player pick the upgrades
=> Use the regular post-battle system?

6) Let the player control his own defenders when a province is attacked
=> Provides the opportunity to play rarely used units
=> Controlling NoDismiss defenders? Potential abuse with losing strategy

7) Let the player customize identical units to tell them apart on the battle field
=> Something simple, like the color of the sprite's arm?
=> Or some kind of colored ribbon?

8) Investigate CPU use
=> Looks like the program runs an infinite redraw loop, pegging one core at 100%
even when there is nothing to compute.

9) Investigate issues on fast CPUs
=> May be related to the previous item?

10) Upgrade the Allegro game library

11) Improve the battle field AI

12) Let the player skip the tutorial even the first time?

13) Make a native Linux version

I like choices, so right on. Are these things technically possible?
I would reinstall for #6. I mean, I'll reinstall regardless (last ragequit+uninstall was thanks to the inestimably infuriating Doh-Gor attack, which I've never been able to survive) but I'd reinstall right away for that.

I quite like your ideas, though I suspect that the second half of that list would require enormous effort (except perhaps 12? I don't know how the tutorial is flagged). At least for now, a CPU throttle works well enough on high-speed machines, though it's of course it would be awesome not to have to "fix" it at all.

Would your idea for #5 mean that you'd get to customize your mercenaries? That might almost make them attractive enough to offset the staggering cost they represent.

What exactly do you mean by "technically possible" ? :-)

Improving the AI is arguably the hardest task.
Fixing the CPU issues could be hard, or might be as simple as changing one API call.
I estimate the other tasks at 1-3 days work each (less for similar tasks).

I would love to have a minimap, like in the latest version of MotBW. Also very important would be to be able to save.
I am surprised no one has made a savegame utility for Eador
It badly needs it imo

I think there are some excellent suggestions in the OP post

Hmm, saving would be trivial to implement, but how would it interact with the concept of rewinds/reverts/undo?

I don't play MotBW anymore, how does the mini-map work? What does it bring to the game?

Hmm, I meant *visually* customizing units. I often have 2/3 swordsmen in my army, and it's hard to tell who's the one with the awesome medal :-)

If each unit had a distinct colored ribbon on the arm (for example; but maybe you guys have better ideas!) then I could remember that the swordsman with the pink ribbon is my killing machine, hehe.

As far as I understand, Alexey Bokulev didn't like the concept of "saving your game". Hence you only get to return one turn in the past, at the minor cost of some glory points in the scoring screen.

The reason no one made a savegame utility may be because it's actually quite simple to save your game: exit the current game to the main screen, switch to the windows desktop, navigate to the game folder, and make a backup of the "save" folder.

I couldn't play this game without it, anymore. It shows me where everything is, it's critical for my strategy. It would be impossible to browse the whole map and try to memorize it, and then also memorize the location of enemy heroes (hell, even my own heroes!) relative to each other - and track their movements. It also clearly shows where the main provinces are. It's invaluable. The AI has a clear visual of the map - getting the minimap evens out the situation.
