The main question that might answer some others i will post as well:

1. Do we have a link to a FAQ/game guide anywhere in english? I see one for the second game (MotBW) but not the first. If there is one can it also be stickied?

There is not even a manual that i can find, and i think this is a big part of many new players early game difficulties (and maybe even late game!). It took me about 4 goes playing blind (with no instructions or guide on what to do) to actually win my first shard, and it felt like a very lucky win based on my previous attempts.

So to help myself and others new to the game i have a few questions that would really help understand what is going on and how to play the game well, as it is certainly worth the effort and i can sense a very addictive and deep game hidden from view here.

Q1: How does 'good' and 'evil' play out in the game? As in what does it effect and is there a way to tell what path you are in during the game?

Q2: how do you save things to carry over to the next shard as hinted at in the screen just before you attack a new shard? Is it purely random or can you build something/put items somewhere to carry them over?

Q3: Is it better to start with shards closer to our own even if they are bigger?

Q4: Is it better for the longterm to play long games on each shard and spend time searching for treasures/items and building your hero's up, or if these never carry over is it best to win each shard as quick as possible?

Q5: is there a source that shows the whole tech tree (so you know what to build for later in the game etc)?
I was unlucky to have played Disciples Gold before playing Eador and learn't how a campaign in this type of game should be done. Then when i played Eador, the campaign made me want to puke with disappointment.

Just play sandbox

1.http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&ie=UTF8&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&tl=en&u=http://www.eador.com/en/index.html&usg=ALkJrhhTuRXu4MuZ3NOoJM-Fm2ui_p8Fow is basically a Eador: Genesis encyclopedia, but you'll have to deal with google translate (originally in Russian).

Q1: Good units have lowered morale if you are evil and vice versa. There are also different "events" that you'll get if you are good or evil. It effects how other a.i. masters(players) like you and if A.I. races(orcs, lizardmen, elves etc.) will be willing to form an allience with you and if they will accept you as a ruler (evil races like evil rulers and vice versa). Also will effect your diplomacy in the astral (good masters will like you better if you're good and vice versa).

Q2. You cannot carry items between shards but you can use "energy" to start with extra items, units, buildings, gold, and crystals but it is very expensive. You can unlock these items by capturing shards.
Q3: It doesn't really matter, do it in whatever order you want.
Q4: It doesn't really matter, benefits from long games are negligable.
Q5: ??? I remember using one at some point but to be honest I don't know where it is. Just use the Eadorpedia.

There are many other forum threads much like this one. If you need more help try looking at these:

Also If you are playing on beginner, beware. Many tactics that work on beginner won't work in higher difficulties (but higher difficulty tactics will still work on beginner).

@mystikmind2000: The campaign is very slow, but it's good if you want a (somewhat) more gentle leaning curve. Don't be so quick to tell him/her to skip it!

No, that is not my experience at all, but I should have worded it a bit differently....

I should have said "in my opinion, skip it".

I have to say that I have never really played campaign mode beyond like 3-5 times.

I tend to always start TBS games by playing single scenarios rather than focusing on capaign/story modes. Did it in Heroes 3-5, AoW, Etherlords & Disciples. Often I do go back then todo story modes later. Often I do this because I don't want to make stupid mistakes that I will have to live with beyond a single game.

Sadly I have never really gotten into the whole "Evil" side of this game as to many of their early units have such downsides (Brigs & Thievs).

But yea read most of those threads above and they will answer quite a bit for you.
Thanks very much for the advice and links, that should help me get better at the game.

In relation to the Campaign, as in to do it or not, my hunch is that the game in general was designed for MP battles/skirmishes, so in fact the 'Campaign' feels like a bunch of skirmishes tacked together. With little to carry over between these, neither hero's or items discovered, it feels less like an actual campaign, so is probably more of interest to those that just love battles.

I was hoping for a bit more continuity (say like in Age of Wonders), but now on my fifth shard am having a fun time and don't mind it too much. I'm sure once i hit the coming brick wall that i have seen others talking about i may change my mind and opt for the other modes of play.

And one more question on that.

If playing a single player map, how big are the biggest maps? Do you chose how many enemies you are against and maybe the size of the game world?

Yes in the Single Scenario mode you get to choose Map Size, Number of Enemies (and their skill level), as well as resource level and number of Forest/Hills/Swamps etc.

In regards to map size their are 8 map sizes from Tiny, Small, Average up to Colossal. You cannot have MORE than 2 players on a Tiny Shard or 3 on Small the number of players will automatically increase the shard size. The maximum number of players is 16 and needs at least a Huge or Colossal shard to fight on.

I have yet to try beyond 5 players on a Average Shard. I don't even really want to contemplate how tough the higher ups are as I already pretty much close to max out 2 Heroes on a Small.
You can edit shard.var with notepad and have 16 players on tiny shard.
Also it is possible to slightly increase size of Colossal shard (to 24x24, IIRC)

I'm kind of surprised to hear you say that. I think the campaign mode is by far the best way to play Eador Genesis (unlike some of the other games you mentioned, in which the campaigns are nice to have, but nothing special).

3-5 times is quite alot though! But I agree, I much prefer this campaign mode over the string of narrowly scripted scenarions that other games offer. This is random maps with benefits, I love it. Usually don't tough the campaigns in Heroes or Aow at all, just no fun for me to have no freedom.
Yes, I actually like the progression of the campaign, but I also really like the story context. The whole thing is very well done.

It's long though, for sure. If I had played through the entirety several times, I'd probably stick to single maps too.

I should clarify that by 3-5 times I don't mean full times through the campaign but individual maps.

The main problem I have with the campaign mode though is how slanted it is against my favorite starting class the Mage. I want to actually play the game not have to earn random unlocked buildings from shard to shard where you can never depend on getting a dependable set of spells.
That is only on the first 10 shards maybe, which you can do in a few hours, later mage is the easiest I think, especially when you have astral energy to spare for a free healer each shard.
