So you got your DK copy just to discover it's the dos version and without Deeper Dungeons right?

Don't be sad, you can patch it to work as windows 95 version and then use KeeperFX with it.

How to patch the game to obtain the D3D\win95 version:

download this http://www.tapper-ware.net/files/dk95.exe (self-extracting 7z archive)

it includes keepd3d.exe (directx executable) and keeper95 (win95 version), and also the executables for Deeper Dungeons.
Don't forget to update the CFG file with the correct path if needed.

Playing with KeeperFX

KeeperFX is an awesome mod that inject a new directx renderer via a DLL.
You can grab it from here: http://keeper.lubie.org/html/dk_keeperfx.php

modifying the .cfg file you'll be able to pimp your resolution up to ginormous sizes, just look at my version of Dungeon Keeper here, running at 1920x1080:

I probably just suck at installing stuff, but:

1) When trying to run the D3D\win95 version files, nothing happens (I did update the path of the Keeper.cfg)

2) When unpacking the KeeperFX complete version, I get ~1.000 errors (chose to abort the unpacking)

KeeperFX isnt a mod, it's a remake/clone and it uses SDL to render the game. It doesnt inject a new renderer to the original game.

Install 7-zip or update your WinRAR to a newer version.
I need a more detailed explanation on how to do this. I downloaded the patch, unzipped and think I did everything as I was supposed to. But I obviously didn't.
Heyyo,

Awesome post! This definitely needs to be stickied! :D

I got it to work at 1920x1080 fine too, but this game doesn't seem to like uber high resolutions, lol, there's some nasty rendering cut-off on the bottom.

If you do 1280x720 though the cut-off is very minimal in the bottom corner when ya look at the level diagonally.

well it's not a clone, but I've examined it better and while it uses a new SDL renderer it uses the original game exe (turned into a dll) to call gameplay funcions and stuff, and of course it uses content and levels from the original game...

For people having problems with the original d3d version, keeperFX runs without any extra effort, just download it, extract and play. Of course buy the game from gog first to show your support

It uses the original binary for code that has not yet been rewritten, so KeeperFX is playable even though it hasnt yet been fully rewritten, because it is able to use the old code. Eventually that DLL will no longer be needed.

For all intents and purposes, KeeperFX is like OpenTTD, just for Dungeon Keeeper.

KeeperFX apparently doesn't like skirmish games (Multiplayer -> 1 Player). Game starts with "You have conquered this realm" and no AI opponents.

Back to the vanilla GoG version, then :/.

I just tested some randomly picked map and that message doesn't pop up for me.

Btw, I don't get why anyone should "patch" it to KeeperFX - it's standalone. Only problem is that i has to load the music from the cd.

Could someone give a bloody tutorial for the less technically savvy of us? :(

For the gog.com version of the game.

Just tried it, and now keeperfx does not work, all I get is a "Is not valid Windows program" message.
The OP REALLY needs to explain how to install this in more detail.I hate it when people give bad technical advice.
Right, I'm gonna explain this:

To run the Dungeon Keeper FX Mod, you need to go HERE:
http://mystic-gamers.org/keeperfx/
and download THIS:
http://mystic-gamers.org/keeperfx/files/KEEPER%20FX%200.39.rar

Extract and Install like you would anything else. Once that is done, open the keeperfx.cfg file located at *\Keeper FX\

Make sure the following is accurate (change where it isn't):
INGAME_RES=1280x720x32 1024x768x32
FRONTEND_RES=640x480x32 640x480x32 640x480x32

Run keeperfx.exe
Any news on Wine (Linux) compatibility?
KeeperFX requires an original Dungeon Keeper CD to play the music. Just FYI.
