My guess is that it's because of different versions. I simply copied this list from another thread:

1.3 vanilla - great version.
1.3 cracked - great version.
1.51 - the best version of the game.
1.6 - don't use
1.61 - don't use.
1.7 vanilla - what 95% of people use.
1.7 silver edition an enhanced 1.7 version.
1.7 GOG a very good adaptation of 1.7 version.
1.71 - don't use.
1.72 - don't use.
1.73 - an okay version to try.
1.8 - don't use.

So potentially the GIM version that is based on version 1.5 might be the one for you. Please look here for a link to this version: http://www.gog.com/forum/dungeon_keeper_series/dungeon_keeper_ii_version_deiscussion
i had assumed that because the editor came with dk2 it was the same version. is this not the case? how do i find out?

Have a look in the game's folder, search for the readme.txt (the first two lines). This would be the first place I'd look.
it is the same version as dk2. no matter what i try i cant get the maps to work!

What I mean is: the disc version is 1.3, and if you built the missions with 1.3's editor, there might be compatibility issues ((I never tried that, so I couldn't possibly say). What you can do is download version 1.5-based General Improvement Mod and open the files with the editor provided there. See if that works, then try them out in the game (GIM version and GOG version).

thankx for replying.
i maby a little blond here... the dk2 from gog.com is v2.0 and the dk2 editore from gog.com is v2.0 aswell. surely this makes them compatable? i never had an issue when trying feebaly to run it in compatablilty mode etc way before discovering gog.com. i used to run v 1.7 both dk2 and the editor. i am totally confused ;/

Dude, really read my first post. The GOG version is 1.7.

Well, the GIM version is just a suggestion based on the fact that there is a file called "DK2 Editor pro.exe". I have no idea if it's any different from "DK2 Editor.exe" (file size seems the same), but it's still something you can try. There aren't many options let, are there? ;-)
