You're asking about getting the Hellfire 1.01 patch installed, correct?

The Hellfire v1.01 patch installer is a 16bit .exe, so it won't run on any 64bit version of Windows. Back when I first moved from 32bit XP to 64bit W7, I came up with a workaround for that problem. By installing Hellfire on an old 32bit XP machine and then comparing the Hellfire game files before and after applying the patch, I found that all the patch did was create three new .TXT files (Hellfire.txt, Patch.txt and Version.txt) and change three game files( sierra.inf, hellfrui.dll and hellfire.exe ). If you copy those three files onto a 64bit PC's version of Hellfire, you've patched it.

The only hard part is getting a hold of those files. If you have an old PC sitting around, that would help. If not, maybe use a virtual machine.

Below is the patch.txt text. I omitted section 3, because it's about a hundred lines of twenty year old mailing address, phone numbers and instructions on getting replacement floppy disks.
HELLFIRE (European/US) PATCH README v1.01
01/13/98

[1] WHAT THE PATCH FIXES
====================================
This patch provides fixes and enhancements to the Hellfire 1.00 product. It provides a new executable (HELLFIRE.EXE), an interface library (HELLFRUI.DLL), a patch text file (Patch.txt), and a version text file (Version.txt.

List of changes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Fixed Gossip (same gossip from each towner every time)
- Fixed disappearing quests (upon re-entering the town level, quest statuses were incorrectly cleared through array bounds overstep).
- Fixed generating spell books by Adria (would "morph" on new game).
- Fixed the bug where picking up gold when your inventory is full duplicates the gold in your hand and fills your gold slot.
- Fixed the Berserk spell to prevent crashes (large numbers of berserk monsters occasionally attacked dead monsters).
- Fixed inactive monsters to prevent same kind of crash as above
- Fixed entering levels; had crashed on some systems (seemingly randomly).
- Fixed doppelganger's items to not clone Diablo
- Fixed generating rings of fire behind a wall.
- Sped up monk's open-hand attack (users complained he should be faster with feet than with the sweeping staff).
- Various small internal fixes to prevent potential misbehavior.
- Fixed monster hitpoint variable type for tough monsters (some monsters, especially in Nightmare/Hell difficulty, had way fewer hit points than specified)
- Changed Search spell to show items on automap, too (users complained they couldn't find things behind solid walls in Caves, Nest, Crypt).
- Fix to unique items changing between games (veil of steel, arkaine's valor, etc).
- Fixed to dropping and picking back up oiled items (bonus was lost).
- Fixed Cathedral Map activation crash bug
- Added sounds to Mana Drain and Disenchant traps
- Monster hit points in Nightmare/Hell are +100/200 instead of +1.5/+3
- Fixed monster stats display in Nightmare/Hell to reflect the halving.
- Balance/Stability/Harmony now does something

[2] HOW TO INSTALL THE PATCH
====================================

This patch is a self-extracting executable that will place four files into the program directory that contains the Hellfire.exe file. If you have not installed to the default directory, make the appropriate changes on the next screen.

To start the install process, simply double click on the HF101 file and follow the given instructions.

[3] IF YOU STILL EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS
====================================
Some pretty good fixes.

It might also be possible to open the patch file as if it where an archive, since section 2 of the patch notes seems to indicate that's basically what it is. I tried changing it's file extension from .exe to .zip and opening it with Winrar, but that didn't work. Who knows what kind of archive it might be. WTF did people archive things with in 1998?
THANKS! Very soon, i am getting Diablo GOG version (even though i own retail) and i also have the original, HELLFIRE CD!

Much appreciated; i was about to open a thread asking if and how i could apply it (hellfire expansion)!

Thank you OP and thank you, GOG!!!

You're my hero, thanks for this post!

galneon: Does The Hell mod work with the GOG dx wrapper? It requires its own executable, TheHell.exe, to be launched. If not, are there other wrappers for D1 that will allow integer scaled fullscreen 1280x960? (640x480 x2)
Yes, TheHell 1 works too. Just follow the bottom part for copying files into Hellfire folder and run TheHell as you would normally. Even their extra executable for shared stash at Gillian works.
And yes, there is another wrapper. While it doesn't have AA, it does the same job as this one and allows changing settings while in-game.

Pond86: So Hellfire from CD works fine with GOG's version. Heres how to do it. I did this under Windows 10.

1) Install Diablo.

2) Insert Hellfire's CD and run setup.exe. Install it as normal (hd voices are optional) and when asked don't search for an update or register.

3) Go to C:\SIERRA\ and copy the entire HELLFIRE folder to your Diablo installation.

4) Download Hellfire Enchanced If you don't do this then Hellfire will ask for the Diablo CD. Extract it to Hellfire's folder and replace anything it wants to.

The game should then run from hellfire.exe. You should also then be able to uninstall the original Hellfire and Sierra Utilities.

(You will need to uninstall from Settings then Apps if on 10 or Control Panel, as uninstalling it through Sierra Utilities does nothing.)

To get Hellfire running in higher resolutions (like the GOG version, as discovered by Realpsojed):

1) Run Diablo Launcher from GOG, select Video Settings and setup your graphics.

Recommended setup is:
Display mode: Same as Desktop
Presentation: Windowed - integer scaling

2) Copy the ddraw.dll, dxcfg.exe and dxcfg.ini files from Diablo\dx into your Hellfire folder (replacing the files it wants to replace.)

Next time you run hellfire.exe it should work at a higher resolution though much like GOG's version you will get black bars down the side of widescreens.

Since yours is retail Diablo CD, you could install Diablo and Hellfire normally via CD then use Strangebyte's Diablo patch: http://www.strangebytes.com/index.php/projects/1-diablo-1-windows-7-vista-patch for D1, works on win 10.

For Hellfire, I recommend adding Belix's Hellfire v1.02.A5 - an Unofficial Update for Hellfire (so it already patches to 1.02), in addition to the above patch:
http://www.lurkerlounge.com/forums/thread-15760-post-209052.html#pid209052

both can still be played via IPX wrapper for LAN, or Hamachi over the internet.

Hmm, I don't think The Hell's included wrapper supports integer scaling, though I could be wrong. That's nearest neighbor/simple point scaling locked to integer factors. I want to preserve the original image, just have it displayed at twice native resolution. There are generic solutions I can turn to, I just would like to use a Diablo-specific wrapper and will buy the GOG version if there's a way to run its wrapper with mods that have their own executable.

Well, I made screenshots from GOG's DX wrapper with integer scaling ON and TheHell's default wrapper. Can you tell which is which? :)
Both are at 1280x960.

Blizzard has stated that they have no plans to bring Hellfire to GOG at this time:

Blizzard are !@#$

They are bitter over Hellfire and they will never allow it re-emerge. They never even included it in previous retail collections, either (battle chests).

You want it? Get a physical copy, or visit an abandonware site, to download for free.

Since they refuse to sell it, make it available through legit means etc, for the sake of preserving gems of gaming's past, a jolly roger now and then is trully needed.

I absolutely agree; for the sake of preservation (and not having to pay outrageous prices on eBay or Amazon), piracy/"abandonware" sites are very important. Of course, once an "abandonware" game goes up on a digital storefront, it's no longer abandoned, thus not "abandonware". And if it's at a reasonable price on the digital storefront, getting the no-longer-abandoned game from an "abandonware" site should be frowned upon in most circumstances, imo.
Running Windows 10 Pro version 1809 and my Hellfire CD doesn't install as instructed. The setup.exe just hangs and I have to quit the 32-bit process in task manager. Is there a way to manually extract the .mpq files on the CD or is the installer the only way?

Have you tried running setup.exe in compatibilty mode for Windows XP SP2 or Windows 98?

You can also try copying your entire Hellfire CD to a new folder and try launching setup from that. As it could be that the CD could just be being slow to read.

You might be able to i've not tried. If running setup in compat mode doesn't work then i'll dig out my CD again and take a look.
