We just posted a full sales stat breakdown on Gamasutra:

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/186940/defenders_quest_by_the_numbers_.php

Bottom line:
Gross: $286,646
Sales: 40,451

We would never have had the confidence to do this without other developers who have shared their stats in the past, so it's only fair we share our numbers now.

Chief takeaways:
1) Direct sales are still #2 source of overall revenue
2) GOG is a viable (albeit smaller) competitor to Steam
3) Browser based demo was key to our success
4) Desura/Impulse were a disappointment

Your results may vary, this is just one data point and there's still no proof that we have any idea what we're doing. Hopefully this information helps someone!

It is nice to read that DQ have so many buyers, I have hope that there will be more and more customers :)

To be honest, I don't like steam, but I'm not surprised, that more than half of copies were sold in valve's platform. Nowadays many players want to have every game on steam (but I'm not one of these persons ;)), and they often won't buy the game if it hasn't steam version.

BUT-it is good to know that direct-sale is in quite good condition, I've bought DQ directly on your website, and I don't regret ;) Anyway, If I couldn't buy DQ on your website, I think that I would bought it on gog.com. Because I like DRM-free games :)

It is quite surprise for me, that "in-browser" demo was so important. In my case (and many of my "playing colleagues") it is not too comfortable to play in browser, we prefer to download and play in the game.

I think that really bad statistics on Desura is the effect of the small popularity of this "e-shop". The user needs to install another client (and many of players wants to have steam only), there are prices not in dollar, but in euro (so the gog.com and your website are winning here ;)), and... Well, many of the customers just don't know, that something like desura is existing ;P

By the way-it is really kind and nice, that all of these changes you've done with your game, were implemented in DQ for free (challanges, newgame+ with new "sub-quest). Many of the developers would just sell it as DLC. I have hope that there will be more of indie developers like you :)

I'd like to thank you very much for this ! I'm currently developing a game (in adobe air as well) and this is really interesting.
Could i ask you some additional questions ? My game is not finished yet but i have to start pondering some options for marketing and selling platforms...
Hope the sales figures met your expectations! I wouldn't have thought twice about your game without the browser demo or a lot of good word of mouth. It started out feeling like just another flash tower defense game, but by the end it was clear you'd made something deeper and rewarding. I bought a couple copies when GOG put it on sale, so thanks for offering it here.
This was a very interesting article, and it is always cool to see developers interested in players opinions.

It was the DEMO that made me buy the game, because at first sight it was like any other online flash games, but while playing it was very visible the cure that was put in it's making of.

Now that I finished the standard game, and I'm ready to start the NG+, I feel somewhat guilty having bought it for only 2 €

I will keep an eye open for your next game :)
i have a puny budget for pc gaming, so when i got the chance to buy what looked like a fun game,
with what i call a lot of click strategy, and a nice art style, i jumped on it. i don't need a demo to
convince me about a game, i can usually spot it by sight, although i do like playing demos just for
the fun of it, before i try a full game, even if i was going to buy it anyways, like i always do on my
nintendo 3ds. i never get stuff on steam because i'm tired of work arounds to get stuff to play on a case sensitive volume on my mac. and not only that, but the stuff is too expensive and out of my range. gog gives me good customer support, the money back guarantee, and good deals. i could pay more, but then i wouldn't have invested so much total dollars into gog and the companies that release on gog, as i have so far. higher prices would have made me much more stingy, but lower prices and i splurge on gaming because i think it is worth it.
