This might not be one of the best games out there, but it's not that bad.
Sometimes I think most of you haters just hate because you want to be on that wagon with the others, and that you haven't even tried the game beforehand.

EDIT: Fixed typing error over a year old. :P

Some maybe do, but I'd have to say that some of you defenders must only defend because you paid $5 bucks for this game and you can see the positives in any game for $5.

I actually played the game back when it came out and it was literally unbeatable until patches came out. The team AI is horrendous and in a game where you have to lead your companions to the exit on EVERY level that really helps kill a lot of the enjoyment. On release the game even had checkpoint saving that required gems to further frustrate the player. The enemies and story are also pretty dumb early on. Very few redeemable aspects to the game early on other than the music.

The game does improve during the later episodes but even at it's best Daikatana is a mediocre action game.

I can understand your hate since you bought it in its prime time and lost so much on it. I haven't bought it but still needed to get it out of my system.
I do hope most of the negative comments are from people who have actually played the game and not parroting the negative rep the game has.

Its been pretty funny seeing all the negative responses Aliens Colonial Marines has been getting from forum posters who haven't even played the game. Don't get me wrong, I trust the game reviews that this A:CM game is a pile of doo, but I'm going to try and not throw insults at the game until I've played it myself... a few years from now when on sale!
I agree with the OP and most reviewers ride the hate bandwagon.
The real reason behind this misconception is because of the negative journalism backlash Ion Storm got after their marketing for this game, which was in all honesty, a PR disaster.
Ion Storm presented itself as the most badass gamedeveloper that would produce the most badass games and Daikatana would be their flagship title.
Aggressive marketing was a trend in the nineties but I think when Ion Storm came most people were pretty much fed up with it, so when Daikatana was released in 2000 and couldn't live up to all the hype, the graphics were on the same level as Unreal released 2 year earlier for instance, it became a juicy target for the gamingpress, similar like what happened to Duke Nukem Forever.
The real problem of all this is that other Ion Storm titles suffered from it, especially Anachronox and to a lesser extend Deus Ex.

I have played Daikatana a few years back and it is a decent FPS although also not a great one.

They also used screenshots from the beta versions. I think that the top right one with the skeleton is from ~1998 version when it used the Quake 1 engine.
I have to admit, I'm guilty as charged, I have never tried this game and never intend to. Although intead of hate I'd say lack of interest and general amusement on the PR stunts back in the day. I've also never been interested in being John Romero's bitch.
I've been playing it for a little while now. i'm finding that once you're past the first episode the game improves by leaps and bounds (basically, as soon as you get the Daikatana) ..It's a shame they had to frontload all the worst parts though.

Exactly. The first level have nothing favourable to the player. Boring level design, overpowered enemy, useless set of weapon, horrible sidekicks pathfinding, basically everything is stacked against you. But once you get past all those annoyance, the game isn't that bad.
I bought it in the recent sale just to see if it lived up to its reputation. So far, in the first level, it definitely has.

If it gets better later, it's quite possible few people ever realized that because they gave up before then.

Let's not forget how good the multiplayer portion of the game is. It's the true successor of Doom's and Quake's multiplayer.
I loved it way more than Quake 2 and Half Life

After you learn to control them and get to know all the tricks and you know how to circumvent the bugs then they're OK and help you with various things.
