the fix works!
The "fix" does nothing...
anybody else got any further solutions or are we waiting on gog for this one?
now ok, I dealt with this Sh*t finally:

download this patch:

http://www.gsc-game.com/index.php?t=downloads&ss=299&s=patch

and extract it to somewhere.

then

make copy of D:\GOG.com\Cossacks Anthology\Cossacks - Art Of War\mdraw.dll and delete original file (mdraw.dll)

NOW

copy downloaded patch ddraw.dll IN PLACE OF mdraw.dll (copy to dir and RENAME to mdraw.dll)

THEY FAILED TO NOTICE US THAT YOU NEED TO CHANGE FILENAME AS WELL (I MEAN DOWNLOADED ONE)

now it works. hope this helps. good luck. (my system is WIn7 x64, Nvidia Quadro1000M, latest drivers - whose download didn't help)

@baranello: You are my hero. That finally fixed this annoying issue. I've got my laptop hooked to a 24" monitor and what you said finally fixed it.

Of course, now the colour issue is back, but that's fixed by killing explorer before starting the game. Now I can go into the game and change the resolution to 1920x1080 and it works just great. Thanks so much!
Guys you can also use the DXWND fix the same as for Eador. Google for "oldgames.ru dxwnd" it's a small program that hooks direct draw... can be used to make many games that have mouse/blackscreen problems run well. Sadly it's only available from this russian site (oldgames.ru). Gog should really work harder it's no fun if you have to fix the games yourself :-(.

I just tried the fix with the DLL too... so if using DXWND you can play all the Cossacks games... but only windowed in native resolution. The DLL works not really... I am having intel integrated graphics but resolution changes frequently lead to crashes and sometimes shit is just buggy/strangely colored.

Just tried Fisk86 fix and it worked, cheers for that.
Running on a sony laptop 64bit windows 7

Now lets go back 10 years and have some fun
Upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 (where Cossacks Back to War worked really well).
Was prompted to install "Direct Play".
Cossacks comes up OK, but mouse pointer does not move.

Is there any fix for this or plan to fix this?

tia

PS tried the dddraw.dell fix described above, did not work

PPS having some success with www.play-old-pc-games.com/ (DXWnd), managed to can play a (networked) game.

PPPS Be great if GOG could fix this though

How did you come so far? I would be happy if i could play :(
I have downloaded DXWnd from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/?source=typ_redirect
with the instructions from
http://www.play-old-pc-games.com/compatibility-tools/using-dxwnd/

The program works as far as i can see, but i cant find a profile for Cossacks in the "export"-Folder...?
Did you create a profile for cossacks on your own?
Or did you download the profile from elsewhere? (couldnt find one so far)

I would be grateful for any help here, i would really love to play cossacks again!! :)

P.S.: I couldnt do that trick from Fisk86, because i have Win10 and the Menus are all different :(
If i click "detect" in step 2, there is no sign that says "another display not detected"

Upgraded from win 8.1 to 10.
Was able to install 'The art of war' without any issues but the mouse does not move on the game menu
using 'RENAME to mdraw.dll' suggested by baranello - the mouse does seem to move but i am not able to see the pointer moving.

Tried the running the game in virtualbox on win XP but I am not able to change the resolution to 1024x768x8 due to which the game fails to start. somehow the mdraw.dll solution does not work in virtualbox.

Please help

CountRaven: None of the Cossack games seems to let me move the mouse pointer once I arrive at the main menu. The music plays but I cannot go any further.

I am running Windows 7 and ran the installastion file with administer privliges and in XP compatibility mode.
Restarting the computer did not work and I am sure my drivers are up to date.
Reinstalling also failed to fix it.

The two Thief games and Deus Ex which I purchased at the same time are working well.

There are some tools out there that allow you to set the affinity before running an application. The one I tried was Set Affinity II. You can find it here.

Please let me know whether this solved the problem.
