Hello,
I have just purchased Cossacks and it is not compatible with Windows 7 at all!
Game starts with the stupid startup videos and after that all I got is a black screen with Cossacks music :(

Have you right clicked the desktop shortcut and enabled the 'Run as Administrator' option ?

Yes I did.
I am a computer specialist and a programmer myself.
I did disable everything about the security and run as administrator and also disabled UAC, basically done everything.

I have the original game and id does work in the same way the only different is the colors.

It doesn't look like this game has been fixed for windows 7 at all.

- set compatibility mode to XP service pack 3 ?
- disabled visual themes, desktop composition and display scaling on high dpi settings ?

Lol,
everything is done.
And Windows 7 also reports,
"Program not supported".

I have the original game and been trying to make it work for long with no success.
The reason of buying it here was simply the believe that it will work :(
It had that with my old retail version that I bought many years ago. But it did not even work with Windows XP for some reason.

I thought that GoG would fix such nuissances. Try to contact the support, they will give you an answer in a short time.

Good luck with your issue.
It looks like the shortcuts installed to the desktop have some special commands to start two programs. If you're not using the "official" shortcuts, try creating one with this as the target:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Cossacks Anthology\Cossacks - Art Of War\Cossacks.exe" .\videos\cdv.avi dmln.exe

Of course replacing the relevant path is necessary.

Otherwise, I can tell you that I have the GoG version working on two Win7 computers, no issues. So, there is hope.
I bought GoG Cossacks and it runs on Windows 7 64bit. Works with my Nvidia graphics card laptop and my Intel graphics desktop. No compatibility settings either. I did install into my C:\Games directory rather than C:\Program Files (x86) as I do with all games to avoid issues with option settings or save game files. Perhaps installing it like that would fix it? Worth a try.

I have the same Problem, direct draw init fail error message after the first series of intro videos :/ also on win7 64x
I am really tempted to play these classics but all these messages are keeping me from it.
I had a problem with a program starting. Downloading and installing the DX9 setup fixed it. I can't remember the exact error. You can download it here.

By the way, if you stop 'explorer.exe' , you can play the original without colour problems.
After you exit from the game you should run 'explorer.exe'.
Very easy solution: go to the installation folder of the gam(s) and use dmcr.exe instead of the Cossacks.exe in order to start the game.

Same problem and can't find a fix.
I have a similar problem - I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 and the mouse doesn't work in Cossacks. Makes it impossible to get beyond the initial menu. First problem I've encountered with any GOG games, but I hope someone is working on fixing it.
