Ancientways: My only thing, really, is that if it looks just like blood and plays just like blood then there's going to be little point in buying the remaster.
The performance would be a LOT better. DOSBox is fairly demanding, especially for games like Blood that were done at the tail end of the DOS era. It needs a lot of CPU cycles to have its framerate be comparable to a pentium level pc with the game running natively on it. Plus, it allows for a lot of embellishment in the way of GPU effects such as glows and explosions and modern features.
That said, with NBlood now out, which is simply
amazing and offering most, if not all, the features I'd want in the Blood Remaster, I'm seeing less and less point in it. Plus, NBlood has source code released, eliminating the age-old problem with the original game
and BloodGDX. It also runs natively (a
substantial performance gain) thanks to being a C/C++ Eduke32 port,
unlike BloodGDX which is in Java, which has a number of performance and security issues, even with things like JIT compilation. C/C++ decently optimized will always have more reliable performance. I'm honestly excited for future releases of NBlood that further increase its already fantastic accuracy of the original game. It's the best thing to happen to the Blood community in a very long time.
DustyStyx: They are trying to retain compatibility with original Blood, again to allow user mods and cryptic passage to work. But the remaster would remove a number of limitations Blood has with the DOS/Build environment as far as color pallet, texture resolution, number of monsters, etc. That said, it is still up in the air if Nightdive is going to provide an updated MapEdit as well. So while the potential for moding will be there, the tools to do it might not be available.
I don't like the weapon selection thing either. Hopefully that will be something that can be turned off. You would think that it showing up in Caleb's hands would be weapon selection enough....
If the compatibility is perfect, then at least you could use the original tools to create maps and mods for it. Fortunately those were originally available.
Yeah, I'm not fond of that weapon selection graphic on the side either. Seems unnecessary and mars the view in the game.
