Running Mac OS version of BG the original saga on Mac OS 10.7.5

BG had been crashing frequently (about once every hour or so, always on initiating combat or NPC dialog) but I was OK with that, dealing with it by saving frequently.

But tonite it crashed and after restarting, the video was horrible… like a bad vertical sync problem with flashing black horizontal bars rolling up the screen. Restarting the Mac didn't help. It's unplayable.

Downloading the installer again (deleted the .dmg like a dummy) and backing up my save games. Hoping that reinstalling will fix it.

What the heck happened?

I'm not savvy with macs, but if it gives you a crash report, you may want to look at it. This sounds like a graphics adapter failing. Perhaps some sort of layering was hitting a transistor that's out of whack?

If it keeps happening, I would think about hardware.

If it's not happening again, then I suppose you may have just had a bad install and it was throwing memory in places it ought not to go.

Well, I didn't think it was the video adapter because it only happened with BG1. Also, these wineskin version of the series are frantically buggy.

Anyway, downloaded the installer and copied a new package onto my HD and it works. Saved games intact, too. Somehow the game ate itself, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was the wineskin wrapper.
I'm glad it got resolved with the reinstall. I've heard of people installing Windows on their macs as a dual-boot system. It might be a nice work-around the next time you want to slice up your HD.

Have fun killing gnolls!

Provided, of course, that there are gnoll more problems at least.
