Hickory: No, as I said, far from it. First, and most importantly, they are *not* joinable NPCs. The very first persons you're likely to come across -- not counting Imoen, Jaheira and Minsc, and even before the non-joinable Xzar & Montaron -- are Aerie, Nalia and Anomen.

I can see there's confusion... much confusion, which is why I said I didn't recognise it.

javihyuga: Why do you assume it has to be party member / joinable character at Shadows on Amn?
I never assumed anything. The OP stated it quite plainly:
"In Shadows of Amn I refused the mission where the evil fighter thief you usually met as your first companion wanted to rescue the evil wizard from being imprisoned by the Harpers. I refused because I was working for and with (Jaheira) the Harpers. "

He didn't say it was a quest given by party members / joinable characters at Shadows on Amn.
Then what does "I refused the mission where... wanted to rescue the evil wizard" mean? He most certainly did say that.

Monty and Xzar still are, at least as far as I know, the only duo of evil F/T and wizard which are joinable party members at one point on the saga (and the most likely first additions to charname and Imoen's party while at it), that in Shadows of Amn, request you to rescue someone form the harpers. Which actually is what guardofhull said.
You seem to be as confused as the OP. I will say it again: Xzar and Montaron are *not* joinable characters in Shadows of Amn. They are in Original BG/Tales of the Sword Coast, but there is no harper quest with Jaheira in that.

But yes, I know Monty and Xzar are not joinable in BG II. I knew it when they didn't join my party and didn't appear on one of the joinable characters' charts, thank you very much. And I know that, again, in the second part, the 4 first potential party members are Imoen, Jaheira / Minsc and Yoshimo. What I don't understand is how a duo which fulfills all requirements is "far from it".
Because they are not joinable characters in Shadows of Amn. How many times must it be said? Sheesh!
Of note, Xan and Branwen are playable in Baldur's Gate 2, but only in the tutorial. If you import the tutorial save into Throne of Bhaal, however, you can use them there. Note that Xan has 25 intelligence (to prevent failing to scribe the spell in the tutorial).

There's also a version of Imoen with really good thief skills.

Note that these characters have BG1 style proficiencies.

Hickory: [...] XZAR AND MONTARON ARE NOT JOINABLE IN SHADOWS OF AMN!! [...]
Now I see it. In Shadows of Amn all quests are given by party members. For example, the quest from the dryads about getting some acorns. Or the guild's ones.

Therefore, a quest from a NPC who is an evil fighter thief who usually was met as a fist companion* in your character's past, asking to rescue an evil wizard cannot exist. Because they are not joinable on Shadows of Amn any more!.

I mean, how could you meet someone and accept/decline a job if he is not joinable in SoA.

You cannot recognise that scenario because how could some NPC who used to travel with you give you a quest, if he is not joinable anymore?! Such a situation would be sooo ludicrous.

*And another proof they cannot be Xzar and Montaron. I mean, yes, they are intended to be the first two people you meet and remember. But hey, when you play Shadows of Amn, you cannot refer to them as the people who you usually first met. Because they are not joinable anymore. So how could you have met them first. Jeez.

This perspective is much less confusing and more logical. Thank you for your insight.

javihyuga: in your character's past,
Putting words into the OP's mouth, and applying BG1 foreknowledge by default does not help your argument one little bit.

You were right Javi. It was Monty and Xvar to whom I was referring. And, it being years since I've played the game, it could wellhave been Xvar asking you to rescue Monty.
