There should be a mod or a fix or a cheat that allows you to do it.

The game engine is not capable of storing all of the real time data states of a combat session. Forget about it.

Shouldn't be a limitation for GemRB or the Enhanced Editions. Unless it's intrinsically difficult to do that.
Don't the enhanced editions still use the same engine? If so, it wouldn't be any different in that regard to the vanilla one. On the plus side, that would also be why many mods have already been successfully ported to the EE.

It has nothing to do with platforms or platform limitations, but the way that the Infinity Engine and it's games function.

Right, but GemRB is a re-implementation (meaning a rewrite from scratch) of IE, and the developers of the EEs have the full source code of IE, so they should, in theory, also be able to implement such a function.

Except that (I believe) they don't have the required permissions to do that -- it would mean a complete rewrite of the save game structures and associated game code. There is only so much that they are able to incorporate into enhancements -- they are not allowed to change to original story or contents of the game at all, for example. You are talking about completely rewriting the IE, in effect. It ain't going to happen.

story content != engine code

Core Game Improvements

The Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate has been given an extensive overhaul. The original source code has been cleaned up and improved, sped up, and now has support for modern platforms. Over 400 issues from the original game have been found and fixed.
Sounds like a near-rewrite to me.

No, cleaning up and optimising code -- even adding cross platform support -- is not the same as altering game structure. But hey, feel free to keep wishing...

Besides, you can force auto-save a game during battle by leaving an area a game has designated as important enough to auto-save when entering it or leaving it.
