Hello, I am abaout to start Baldur's Gate 2 but I would like to know if it is neccesary to start with the first one first, greetings and excuse my english I am from spain!
It isn't necessary, but I would recommend it. The games are kind of like one huge game, and the story continues. That said, they are also somewhat separate, so you can play BG2 and still understand what goes on.

Good luck whatever you choose to do, you're about to embark on an amazing journey :)
I played 2 first and then 1. If you do that, it does spoil a few major plot points/twists in BG1. And BG1 is a fantastic game, too.

So I'd also recommend 1 and then 2 as well. You can carry over your character if you'd like. And there are mods that combine the two into one big game using the BG2 engine so everything looks prettier and you can use all the classes from BG2 in BG1.
I concur with others: while it is not necessary, it is highly recommended that you start at the beginning (ie. BG1), because the storyline of BG2 continues with your character -- and other main characters -- from BG1 picking up from where BG1 ended, as the plot unfolds on your character's heritage, and why things happened as they did in BG1.
I concur - one more vote for starting with BG1. It's a great game in it's own right and well worth playing *first*. As others said, getting to follow the story from beginning to end, by playing the games in the proper sequence, is highly recommended.

You only get to play either game, for the first time, once. Might as well have the story, the plot twists and the mysteries revealed as you play, rather than starting off with BG2 and finding out enough about yourself that it will detract, somewhat, from getting the most enjoyment out of BG1. Just one man's opinion, of course.
Highly recommend because in Baldur's Gate 2 they keep refering events and character developments that kinda spoils things and leaves you confused, when I played BG2 I did not know what was going on with all the references BG1, I did not understand.
