NWN2 has a persistant world set in the BG1 universe.

I think this is it, but it's been a long time:

People are always working on recreating the games in NWN and NWN2 and now Dragon Age engines, but I think that the series is dead. Perhaps forever. And even if Atari did bring it back, Bioware probably wouldn't do it.

Lorfean: Edit: Of all the developers out there I think that Obsidian Entertainment, who developed the NWN2 games, are most likely to give us another classic D&D CRPG -- they already have a working relationship with Atari and Wizards of the Coast, and their CEO has talked about re-visiting the Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment franchises several times in the past few months. My money would be on Icewind Dale III.
Yeah, but won't that be D&D 4? I don't think that will be quite the same, no matter how true to the story and atmosphere.

It would be, yeah. But IWD2 was D&D 3.5, which was very different from the AD&D 2E rules that the first game used, and that worked. I don't think it's so much the rules you're working with as it is what you do with them... NWN2 is a good example of this as well, as IMO Obsidian did a MUCH better job at interpreting and expanding upon the 3E rules than BioWare did with the original NWN. I'm confident that they can make great D&D games, regardless of which version of the rules they're forced to work with.

To be fair, BioWare was developing NWN while the 3.0 rule set was also in development, so they didn't have a finalized rule set to work with.

Having said that, I agree that Obsidian would likely do a great job with a new D&D game. And I think the 4E rules would be no issue in that regard.

You're right, and I knew that... I guess, because of their recent shenanigans, I'm being a bit harder than I should on the (few) things I didn't like about BioWare's past efforts.

NWN was a great package and very ambitious at the time, and I put many, many hours into it. But NWN2 simply suited my tastes better and I loved what Obsidian did with the rules.
I liked NWN for a while, but I got really tired of every single room having three chests which all had to be disarmed and lock picked. I found the expansions to be better than the original.

The only problem I have with Bioware is that they are essentially remaking the same game again and again. Regardless of the system, you make a character and meet 6-7 folks who can fulfill different roles in your party. Each one has a quest line you need to finish, and one or two might want to bone you.

After playing enough games I've learned, always make a thief. You almost never get a regular thief that will stick with your party the whole game. But you will always meet a tank and healer very early on.

I like their Mass Effect line best, simply because the powers work well, and the shorter play times make for good replay value.

As for AD&D, my favorite one is still the gold-box Pool of Radiance (which is where I got my avatar).
Neverwinter Nights has some great fan made mods set in the sword coast region.

Adam Millers epic trilogy passes through the sword coast too...

Like most people said, BG series is finished and is most likely never gonna get a sequel (or prequel).
That's partly why this site (gog) is here, right? To re-live your favourite oldies again and again :)
I swear I can practically keep on playing BG 1 and 2 forever.
The future is left to NeverWinter now:
