It's obviously a nightmare to play this in windowed, 640x480. The problem I have is that I hate the way how wide screen mods stretch and ruin the look and feel of the UI.

What I do is set my monitor at 4:3 and then my screen resolution to 640x480. The result is a slightly blurry UI and graphics...

Does anyone else do this for these types of games?
AFAIK the Widescreen mod supports 4:3 resolutions higher than the claustrophobic 640x480.
I don't use widescreen mod. I have the option 'Maintain aspect ratio' in the graphic card settings and simply have black bars on the sides whenever I play older games that don't support widescreen resolution.

I do the same, but I have to set the monitor to 4:3 to get the black bars. How can you stand the blurriness of the graphics sometimes?
My monitor is rather small (18,5'), so I don't have any blurriness.

But the difference in sharpness that the widescreen mod would keep by not stretching everything, but expanding it?

My monitor is about 21". Maybe I should just set the resolution a little lower at 16:9 to not have it fit the height of the screen.

Do you know what the default supported resolution for BG2 is? I heard you can also change its resolution in the INI file.

I've tried the Widescreen mod. It doesn't work. Oh well. Not a big deal.

It's a shame it isn't the early 2000s. I'm sure this game looked great back then...

Can you share screenshots of what you are talking about? I don't think I understood your initial request correct based on your later comments.

I don't have a request. I just wanted to know what resolutions people play the original, unmodded BG1 on.

I don't mind playing the 640x480 resolution at 4:3 even if its fuzzy.

Ah ok. I am one of the few who prefers BG1 over BG2. However, I find the original BG1 very very verrryyy ugly. So I am using the BGT mod, which enables me to play BG1 in the beautiful BG2 engine. I even wrote a guide about how to do that on Linux a while ago.

I know that's not what you asked, but I do not think there is a good way of changing the resolution without using a mod.

Yeah... The reason I don't want to play BG1 in the BG2 engine is so my eyes can brighten when I finally get to BG2. I want to play it as it was back in the day. I played both the EEs on my iPad when it was released, but I rushed the games and I'm pretty sure I cheated too. I don't remember.

My only solution is to buy a CRT monitor but that's a bit ridiculous at this point.

Me too!

I can't remember what video card I have, but it's 2-3 years old, and it uses the GeForce Experience, so it's an NVidia card. And I'm using Windows 7. And I'm using a 2-3 year-old widescreen monitor with its recommended resolution of 1920 x 1080.

When I install the gog version of the original BG1 (not EE) with the TotSC expansion, my pc runs the game in "full" screen mode (not windowed), with the default (crappy) resolution, with the black bars on both sides of the screen. This automatically happens without me adjusting anything.

I much prefer the better BG2 highest 'supported' resolution, or even the highest 'supported' resolution for IWD1 with the HoW expansion. (I can't remember if they are different or not.)

But even so, I prefer to play 'em unmoded, as the original designers intended. If there is a way to use a better resolution with the original BG1 without mods, I've never heard of it.

So I'm with you man. Hate the resolution, but I live with it, because it's my favorite game series of all time. Cheers!
