Can somebody confirm for me what region this is?

I bought the box set a few weeks back to replace my original damaged disk, only to find that it is the US version that doesn't work on my PC unless i change the region to US... which im too stuck up to do. :P

So i might get it from here for the bonus stuff & DRM free.

Normally GOG games should work in all regions. Can't 100% confirm it here though, because i own a boxed version of BG and so didn't buy it here.

Only exception so far seems to be Commandos btw which is hardcoded to refuse working on systems with the region setting "germany" because of nazi symbols. ;)
There was a game once on GOG which didn't like hungarian locale, but that was a technical issue, not a legal one.
Since GOG is an international site that prides itself for being available all around the globe and since the Australian ASCII (or whatever) code page is probably more or less the same as the U.S. one, I would be extremely surprised if the GOG version didn't work.
1) The Baldur's Gate folder has a config menu where you can set the region.
2) I think the gog.com Baldur's Gate is the UK version. If you want to patch the game, you may need to download the UK patch.

What's the reason if the game on gog is already patched? Or do you mean unofficial patches?

Gog.com games ARE NOT region filtered. NEVER.
If you patch the game, you might re-introduce DRM if the patch even let's itself be applied.
Most patches use a CRC or some similar validation code in order to determine if the file(s) match the signature needed for patching.

This is what the readme, txt says about the Baldur's Gate version:
----------------------
Baldur's Gate (tm)
UK Release Version 1.1.4315 (NOISP)
----------------------
readme_patch.txt gives the following version for Tales of the Sword Coast:
----------------------
Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast (tm)
Release Version 1.3.5521
----------------------
I think these quotes from the readme answer the question which version the Gog.com version is based on.

PC games are not region filtered, too.

But system language conflics and differing keyboard layouts can cause some interesting wrinkles in the gaming experience, or simply a total lack of functioning in the less diligently coded games.

Thanks to someone gifting this to me and confirm that in all likelihood there is no regional prompting in this version.

I remember with my UK purchased originals of this and number 2 that during install I would be prompted that it was not possible to use the game due to my OS being Japanese. This does not happen with this version and the game appears to run and play with no problems.
I think the version they use is the UK one, however if you go into the Config it shows a list of Regions, with the default being Region 0 (no region specified), Region 6 being United Kingdom, Region 7 Continental Europe, regions 1 - 5 being American regions, etc. Dunno what'll happen if you change them or if they are indeed the regions the game will work in (normally you have one region for an entire area, like region 1 for US, region 2 for Europe, etc, seems a bit weird).

Hope that helps.

EDIT: I've attached a pic of the config showing the regions if that helps.

If you bought the 4-in-1 boxset, then patching Tales Of The Sword coast with the latest international patch fixes the region issue. I had the same problem.
