I just downloaded and installed BG1...
The game launches and lets get go through the character creation steps. But when I get to the last step for naming my character, as soon as the name dialog box comes up, it types a long list of "7"s in the box... "777777777777777777"

I've restarted, checked num lock, I cant erase the 7's although I can move the cursor in the box to different locations. Its as if my system is just spamming the "7" character non stop.

What's really odd though? It still does it when my keyboard (usb) is unplugged. I'll unplug it and launch the game and it still happens. I even tried unplugging the mouse immediately after I click the name box and yet it still happens...

I'm at a loss

That is a sucky bug. I had it too (search the forum) and it resolved itself after several reboots of the game. I could not fix it. Search google and you'll find it's not uncommon.

Another user had the issue on this forum, and it resolved itself spontaneously for him.

On a lark, try closing your internet connections and pausing antivirus software. Shot in the dark.
