Hi all,
I've been playing BG1 for the last month or so. I've added the widescreen mod (V3.06), BG1 tweaks (only used some) and Unfinished business. Everything has gone fine until the end of Chapter 5. I got through the Iron Throne building, found 3 letters and reported back to Duke Elton. This should then teleport me me to CandleKeep. But the game crashes to the desktop. By searching around I have discovered this is a likely bug from the widescreen mod and BG1.

Even if I use very old saves I cannot re-enter CandleKeep. The game crashes as soon as that map tries to load. I even tried using the "MissionPack" that the game ships with and starts the game at Chapter 7. If I try to go back to CandleKeep --- a crash. I've reinstalled the game on another computer and using the mission pack I CAN enter CandleKeep (at least the outside of the map). But if I install any of my saves, they crash when trying to get to CandleKeep.

At one point in the game I had to temporarily uninstall the widescreen mod, then re-install it. I let it modify my saves as it recommended and I think that may have corrupted them. That may be why the mission-pack save works from a new game, but not the mission pack save in my game installed on the computer with the widescreen mod.

So is there a way to skip a chapter, perhaps bypassing chapter 6 completely and starting Chapter 7 so I can avoid the Candlekeep map? Or does anyone have a chapter 6 savegame? I'm willing to re-install the game and move on with someone elses save just so I can finish the game.
Thanks,
LZT.
Since the game crashes on the Candlekeep area map I'd try enabling and using the cheat console to teleport into an area you can't enter before Chapter 6.

Open the baldur.ini file and under [Game Options] add Cheats=1

In the game press CTRL-TAB to open the cheat console and enter

CLUAConsole:MoveToArea("ARXXXX") where "..." denotes the area where you want to get to. Try the following areas (in this order):

Candlekeep Library (AR2608)
Candlekeep Catacombs (AR2613)
Ducal Palace (AR0108)
Thieves Warrens (AR0146)
The Hidden City (AR0123)

While this may get the OP into Candlekeep, it will not advance the chapter flags, plot flags and variables. The most sensible thing to do would be to get rid of that stupid Widescreen Mod.

Edit: They would also encounter the exact same issue once they reach the end of the catacombs, to emerge back outside of Candlekeep.

Thanks Kmonster and Hickory,
But I think my save games are truly damaged. I can't remember why I had to temporarily uninstall the WS mod a couple of weeks ago then re-install it. I tried saves that are several weeks old (I've only been playing a little over a month) and none will let me enter the Candlekeep map without a crash. I tried the areas you mentioned Kmonster and I CAN teleport in them but my journal is not updated and when I leave the library for instance, there is a crash.

When I re-install the game (on another computer), it works fine and the mission pack coming with the game lets me enter Candlekeep. If I transfer my current save games though, none will let me enter Candlekeep.

I spent several hours looking for a fix but I couldn't come up with one. There do seem to be console commands that advance chapters and I found one that at least opens my journal to Chapter 6 but it is blank. And anyway, I still can't enter Candlekeep. That is why I think my only hope to progress is if someone else can offer a Chapter 6 save and I'll move on from there. It sucks because I've put in nearly 80-90 hours into the game. Though, to be honest, I was getting bored the last week and was kind of rushing so I can finish the game and move on to BG2 which I've read is more fun.

In the meantime, I've installed BG2 last night and this time I saw the game lets you configure higher resolutions, so I set it to 1024x768 which I had previously set BG1 to using the WS mod. This time for mods, I've only installed BG2 fixpack, Banterpack and only a few of the tweaks in the BG2 tweakpack. I hope this will not prove a problem. I read up on the plot of BG1 (spoiling the game for myself) last night so I know what is going on and later today I'll probably just start BG2 and move on.
Thanks,
LZT.
P.S. Are there any things I should worry about with the BGFixpack, Banterpack & Tweakpacks in general or specifically?

Skipping to the start of Chapter 6, it still probably wouldn't work. You have to give the Candlekeep guard a book you get from the Duke at the end of Chapter 5 to gain entry to Candlekeep.

If you use the area teleport several times it should work.

After you've teleported into the Candlekeep library use CLUAConsole:SetGlobal("CHAPTER", "GLOBAL", 6) so you're in Chapter 6 and can get a special ability while resting.
Don't leave the Candlekeep library (there's nothing important outside anyway), explore and when you go up to the highest level the plot should progress, teleporting you to the catacombs (if not you can do it manually).

Explore the catacomb areas but when you're going to leave to the outside save instead, set the Chapter to 7 and teleport to an outside area (AR2700 is the area east of Candlekeep).
Afterwards you should be able (you can use the area teleport for shortcuts if you have other crashes) to progress normally.

Your saved game could be rescued, provided that you remove the buggy widescreen mod. What has happened is the Candlekeep exterior (chapter 6 version, AR2626) has been corrupted and is stored in your saved game. It is possible, since you have never visited this area at the start of chapter 6, to remove it from your saved game. You must unistall the widescreen mod, because it physically alters assets, such as areas, and this is what your game is reading. If you were willing to complete the last two chapters without it, you simply remove AR2626 with Near Infinity.
Kmonster & Hickory,
Thanks for your continued advice. I think the widescreen mod has really messed up my saves. I completely uninstalled the mod but now I can't enter anything. In fact, I can no longer enter any building or move to another map. In my last save I was outside the Iron Throne building. Trying to re-enter causes a crash. I tried to enter a home...crash. I moved to the next map...crash.

As for advancing the chapter to chapter 6 and entering the library, I don't think I would trust my own saves enough. Since I can't enter any map without the WS mod I would definitely have to use it. I would probably need to teleport everywhere. I may consider trying to teleport to the library, and see what happens (though I'll now have to re-install the WS mod). But on the next crash, I would likely give up. I would hate to get to the end of the game and have a crash entering the final cutscene or map.

And now that I know how the game ends, my impetus to continue has waned. I've spent some time today playing BG2 with various character starts today and it looks quite interesting, so I might just move on. Thanks again for your help.
LZT.

This resolved the issue for me. Just use https://github.com/NearInfinityBrowser/NearInfinity/wiki to remove AR2626 from your save and that's it, no need to even touch the widescreen mod!
