Hello everyone!

This post is about the Original Saga (minus the expansion I think) on the Playstation 1.

I found out about the port on Amazon. I was looking at BG stuff and I saw a guide for Baldur's Gate for the PS1. I also saw a Japanese version of BG going for $500. Why is that going for $500?

Anyway... it turns out the port was unreleased and there is some footage online. The gameplay looks pretty choppy and I'd assume it would be a nightmare to control with a Playstation controller. The graphics are an eyesore and the text is heavily pixelated, making the dialogue hard to read at times. Occasionally the game has to take a second to process what's happening when you are scrolling or you try to talk to someone. I guess that if it were actually released some of these would be a little smoother. But I can't imagine it would still be playable.

Here's a link to another forum that has some screen shots that I actually stole from a different forum. Thank you Mr. Other forum!

I think the PS1 port has a few different loading screens. It's kind of hard for me to tell though. When I play BG1 the screen loads so quickly I usually can't make out what the picture is.

I will admit that I do prefer the blue background from the PS1 port over the grey one on the PC.

Putting the ugliness and terrible animations of the port aside, you would need either a chipped PS1 or a Playstation emulator. I can't imagine anybody bothering with that today, other than "because I can". <shrug>

I imagine the Japanese version is going for over $500 because they are hoping someone will be either nostalgic enough or dumb enough to pay that price. As far as the PS1 version goes I would say that it was never released on PS1 for precisely the reasons you outlined.
