Whenever I clicked on the quit game button in the menu the game would freeze, no white screen, just frozen solid. I had to click after a minute until the game error window shows up telling me that something went wrong and the program has to close. It's possible to restart the game from where my save data left off but the problem continues endlessly.

Unfortunately after about 20 hours the game would completely freeze up upon saving the game, preventing me from pushing forward. Can anyone please help me?

the game is not allowed to reach your save game folder... my guess is its in c program files or even a onedrive folder

Maybe, but do you have any advice on solving this problem? Like disabling the gog overlay, or playing from the installation folder? I don't know what to do man :(

I am having a similar problem. Migrated to a new PC recently, whenever I quit BG1 or BG2, the game freezes right after I click the "close" button. Does not happen with any of my other games from GoG. PITA!

And how do you fix it?

TJHoenecke: And how do you fix it?
1 check that is the location... and if so then uninstall it from c program files
2 open Gog galaxy, goto settings tab and pick a different default location to install your games [see image]

note never have temp files goto the same location as games but always put them in their own temp location... more of an issue with older OS like W98-W10 but still worth doing with W11-W12

This is so weird to me, as a month ago I had a different computer, with Windows 10. All of my games were installed in c program files, and I had no issues. Now, I have a new computer, with Windows 11, and the only issue I have is BG1 and BG2 freezing when I try to close the games, which are currently installed in c program files.

I may have to try it your way anyhow.

EDIT: Did it, seems to be working fine now.

Hi! I'm having the freezing issue at exit every time on Win 11. Per this thread, I moved the install location out of the default C program files. However, the install automatically creates the save folder in C:\Users\xxxx\OneDrive\Documents and I can't find an option to change that save folder location in Galaxy or game settings. Any ideas?
Microsoft onedrive liikes to highjack your documents as a way to force people to use it... this is a well known cause of game save or even network share issues but it has to be fixed by opening onedrive and telling it to;
1 fuck off all together or
2 leave certain folders alone

note;
you will need Microsoft account admin settings to change onedrive behaviour because everything in onedrive belongs to Microsoft

Thanks for the response. I did exclude the save folder from the OneDrive backup but it still freezes up when quitting the game, just at a slightly different screen :) As the game itself and quick saves work fine, I'm not sure if it is the save process or something else on exit.

If I manage to fix it, I'll post the solution. I think the game holds up really well considering how old it is.
I had the same issue. To fix the issue I changed the GOG Galaxy configuration settings:
- Disable : Save game backup in GOG Galaxy cloud
- Disable : Overlay

these two fixs are for a sync error which is not the same thing as these other guys but yes having anything extra [like zip files or just images] stored in the game save area means Galaxy will try to upload them as well and then prob run out of storage space on the cloud
