You can bet your shirt that's down to an installed mod. Please post the contents of your weidu.log here.

No mods? Hmm! What version of the game are you playing, and have you applied any patches or overrides?

Ok, then it sounds like you are using an old save game. Is this correct? If so, start a new game and see if you get the same problem. Save games retain lots of data from mods and such, and if something in there is not installed, then it can crash the game. Otherwise, with a clean game, no patches or mods, I can't imagine why this would happen.

Yeah, this is pretty fucked up. It seems like some routines fail if you run the game on higher resolutions than originally intended and it only occurs when I inspect some specific items in my inventory. You can download the widescreen-patch and change the resolution with it, then this bug will not occur (the inventory is rendered in original size).
I recall taking the battery out of my laptop to play with only the power cord attached and, of course, the power blinked off while I was playing BG1, which obviously made me lose my PC for the moment. Right after that I got that stupid "assertion error" message when I tried to reload my most recent save-game. I didn't know what caused it at first but when my power flashed off/on for a second time, a week or two later, I determined the sudden shut-down bugged my save-games. What was really weird was that I could get all the way to where you choose which game to load, and then the error message would pop up. Sometimes, just scrolling through my saved games would do it. I haven't played without my battery in ever since.

I was really peeved, too, as it was my first playthrough and I'd just gotten to Baldur's Gate proper. That had taken me a while, even using some walkthrough help.

Anyway, maybe my experience can help someone else avoid the mistake(s) I made.
