I have Arcanum on my computer, i bought it on a gamestop store i sweden some 5-6 years ago. Played through it once. Now I have played a "ultima edition" which gives you the oppurtunty to level beyond the level cap of 50.
I think this is a wondeful game and i have finished it in a few different aspects, I just love it.
But I wonder, what is new in the gog version? You see, im new to this site and I havent tried any other gog versions of any game whatsoever.
Why should I buy it? What does this version contain?
Please enlighten me!

There really isn't anything new when compared to previously released versions. You will, however, be supporting a company that is dedicated to DRM-free classic games of all genres. I bought it from GOG even though I have the disc(s) somewhere. $5.99 is a small price to save me from finding those discs (and lord knows if they are in playable condition), as well as knowing that it will work on a newer OS.
Think of it as buying a warbond to support the ongoing war against unfair business practices.
I have never patched my game, and I have read about some WS resolution in a patch. Is this something that is included in the gog version?
Basically its just configured to run on newer OS's without having to mess about with that yourself, also all games are already patched to the latest official version. If you already own it and it runs fine on your pc, unless you want to extras gog offer for games theres no real reason to buy it.
There are a couple games that have had extra things done to them like duke nukem manhattan project which gog managed to fix a prism error bug thats been in the game forever. You will need to check games individual forums to find information like this though.

Only official patches are added but if you check the forums theres usually a thread of good and helpful 3rd party mods and patches. As gogs version is no different these should work fine.

No - the WS resolution patch is a fan patch download (links are in a thread about good Arcanum mods)
Can't speak for others but my reason for buying the GOG version, even though i already have a retail copy is because i happen to have a linux box and nothing else to play my games on.
It's a real pain in the ass to set up a game to run under wine and then you have to deal with some crappy "please insert cd" thing. A lot of copy protection schemes don't work very well. or at all under emulation.
GOG games run withouth any type of DRM or disc checks and have made my gaming life a bit easier.
I also bought the GOG version because i skipped this game back when it came out.
Still, that was only because I like having official, legal version of games I play.
Playwise however, the ultima version is way superior, and I switched to it immediately when I heard about it.

What's the Ultima version? Is that what GOG offers, is that some unofficial mod?

Basically, yes it is.
It's been floating around different torrent sites for at least five years.
So as you might guess, it's also not a legal version :(
Yet still, this fan-tweaked version comes all patched up to the brim, comes with built in level- and charactereditor, worldmap, manual, etc, all on one disk image, with only one, simple to use menu to worry about.
If you look around the forum here, you'll actually find links to installation files to all these neat features, so you can make your own Ultima edition of this game...
... but if you've bought it already, it think it's faster just to download the Ultima version from another source (it's still up) and use that. Since you have the official version on your shelf, there is nothing wrong with this.

So, just go to torrent site and download the mod and it will install with the gog version? BTW, I didn't buy it, It was gifted to me by the support team because I was having a lot of technical problems with another game that I bought for the same price. I previously kind of dismissed this game until I started reading some reviews and looking at screen capture images. I'm currently caught up on the whole D&D template, but this one looks pretty fun. I just hope that it's not the same deal as Sacred, because I bought that thinking it looked fun, and still lament the time that I spent on it. It had no story whatsoever. of course, I'm not much of co-op gamer.

No. Use the and create your own "Ultima edition". It's very straightforward. You can find the [url=http://www.terra-arcanum.com/downloads/arcanum]Arcanum universal level cap remover v0.0.1 here, but I wouldn't & didn't use it for the first time through.

I don't think it really works like this (legally speaking).
You've bought on GOG the right to download and play the GOG version only.

Nothing is wrong morally in doing what you say, but I guess it is not really the same legally.

(I'm not a professional in laws, my guess might be wrong)

You're right:
-morally ok,
-legally NOT ok.
Sorry, and i did not make it clear.

Well, I'm not that kind of gamer, so I don't necessarily want to load the level cap remover. But I was talking about the Ultima mod in that comment. Someone said that you could torrent it. My question to you is: How much difference does the Ultima mod actually make in this game?

Truth be told to all you veteran Arcanum folks: I was curious about the Ultima because I'm familiar with the Ultima franchise. I justhadto know what the Ultima version was. I don't usually load mods at all. Sometimes I wonder whether it make for a better gaming experience, but I doubt that I could possibly know that unless I've played the version of the gae that I own sans mods (and that is, of course, excluding any patches and mods that have been loaded into the copy that I have purchased).

This. I think I've bought Arcanum 3 times in hard copy and once here on GOG. I just never want to let it go! :)
