Hey guys, I have a problem with Virgil. After We leave the dark-elf city, he says he has to leave and just runs off into some trees and stays there. This is preventing him from appearing in Caladon.

How can I solve this?

Virgil should be in the basement of the Sobbing Onion in Caladon. I won't say why he's there (so as not to completely spoil), but he'll explain when you find him.

Um. I know. I said that in my first post.

He is getting stuck in the trees just outside the dark-elf city. No matter what I do, every time I walk down the stairs he just runs into the corner of the trees and stays there.

I didn't realize you knew exactly where in Caladon he should be. So if he's not there, its probably a bug. Are you using the Unofficial Patch?

Yes I am. Are you even reading my posts? He is getting stuck in the trees in Tsen-Ang (or whatever). That is why he is not there. How do I get him unstuck from the trees?

Reload an earlier save if you have one.
Alternatively you may try Dominate Will on him, but that may mess up some of his NPC scripts.

Yes, I am. You never said you knew exactly where in Caladon to find him, so I figured I'd give the exact location. You also never said you were using the Patch, so I asked to make sure you have it (seeing as it has numerous bugfixes...figured this may have been one of the bugs it fixes).

Checking for the obvious solutions comes before digging for deeper solutions, and these are the two most obvious solutions. Sorry they weren't the answer, but if I hadn't been the first to reply, I can pretty much guaranty someone else would have made the same replies.

Unfortunately, I haven't run into a "Virgil gets stuck in the trees" bug yet. But I'm on my 2nd playthrough, so maybe it'll happen & maybe it won't. You could also check the forums over at Terra-Arcanum.com to see if anyone's come across this particular bug.
Ok so I tried a few things.

1. I loaded an earlier saved and rekilled Min Goard, talked to Gideon and left. Same exact thing, no matter what he just runs into the corner of the trees and stays there.

2. I told Virgil to wait outside of the tree area, went in and did my business, came back out, and joined up with him but this prevents the script from ever taking place. Now he is with me, but doesn't ever trigger to go back to Caladon.

3. If I walk into the woods area outside of Tsen Ang, he will trigger the dialog and then once again run into the corner of the trees.

What the hell is wrong with this game?
Troika's big problem was that, for all three of the games they were given an opportunity to create, they never had enough time. Each time a different company, always a first game for that company, and always their time was too short for what needed done.
I know that doesn't help you with Virgil, who will probably require some strange and creative work to get around this problem. (A problem I didn't have, for some reason, with roughly the same circumstances.) However, it does answer your question. Arcanum was first built slowly and wonderfully, and then rushed out the door before it was completed.
Here's a potential solution. If he's going to the same spot, go into turn-based combat mode & move in his way before he heads off. Maybe that would force him to take the appropriate route.
That's an odd one...
I'm only on my 1st ever playthrough but I just recently completed that Area.
The only thing I can think of trying is to open a dialog and ask him to move closer to you...maybe if he changes the distance he's keeping from you it'll shake things up a bit.

Ok, so I tried again from a save, did the same steps and this time it seems like it triggered for him to disappear! I'll let you guys know!
That sounds like what happened for me (UAP version) and I found him in the appropriate basement. I hear you're not necessarily out of the woods at this juncture, but so far so good.

I'm glad you (hopefully) fixed the issue!

Are you using the widescreen patch? I could be remembering this wrong but the issue might be that Virgil is supposed to disappear once he is off screen, but if you have the widescreen patch he runs into trees before he reaches the edge of the viewable distance, hence creating the bug. I feel like I had the same issue once and I fixed it by somehow making sure that my camera view was paned in the opposite direction that Virgil runs when he leaves, giving him more space to get off screen.
