So this is my first ever play through so I decide to roll with a premade character Muck Evil Eye (even letting him auto level) as I figure, enjoy playing as a hilariously simple half-ogre. Constantly however because he's an idiot its a struggle to get most of the quests done. I couldn't do... the guy who hates Bates mission because the guard at the factory hates me and won't talk to me. So I got around that by annoying the Bate hating guy till he attacked me (Batebatesbatesbates cracled me up) and stealing the uniforms and walking in.

So now I see Bates and try to talk to him about the ring, except he just mentions how I'm an idiot and there is no dialogue option for "Look at the ring you snooty moron!" arg frustration.

I can think of two items that might help your current plight somewhat: intelligence potions and a large-sized Smoking Jacket (wear at all times when talking to NPCs).

These will definitely help. Also, are you using the Unofficial Patch? It is highly recommended as it fixes a lot of bugs and it's possible that you don't have conversation options that you should have due to a bug. I haven't actually tried a stupid character yet myself so I can't say for sure.

Err, no I'm not. I should probably find and install that and start over shouldn't I?

I'm not absolutely sure that you'll need to start over, but I think you do, unfortunately. But it's worth it, as it really improves the game. Again, though, no promises about it fixing this specific problem! But it will undoubtedly prevent you from running into more bugs later in the game.
