I'm 20th level now w/ Virgil, Sogg Mead Mug and the Dog, about to head to the Black Mt Mines. I thought about using my 2 CP I just earned to boost my CHA to 12, which would give me another companion. I thought Magnus might be a fun choice.

However. I believe he's in the 7th-9th level range, and I'm afraid he'll always be 11-13 levels behind me if I understand how companions auto-level. Am I correct, and it's too late to have him be a viable companion b/c of under-levelling? I think soon I'll get access to Chukka, who should be a comparable level to mine. Might make a better choice, right? (I'm playing an elven mage-type)

1) Magnus (or any other follower with fewer levels than you when they join) will always remain that many levels behind you... until you max out at level 50.* Then, every time you would've leveled up, your followers will each gain a level until they reach level 50 themselves.

*This does not apply if you've chosen to install the level cap remover, which lets your PC continue to level up.

2) Magnus's story is better than Chukka's. (Generally, any NPC with an actual speaking role is worth considering over those who only talk via text.) He will interact with several other NPCs (including Virgil and Loghaire) and is actually at the center of a fun, but rather involved, side quest you can choose to do.

3) Magnus's tech skills allow him to craft items for you to use or sell, even if you're a mage. You just have to hand him the components and say, "Pretty please."

4) Chukka is a goody two shoes. Cross that line once too often, and he drops you like a hot rock and hightails it back to Bates. Magnus is a bit more forgiving (in all matters other than P. Schuyler & Sons) and can often be persuaded to look the other way with a bit of a bribe of Dwarven snuff.

Thank you, you've confirmed my suspicions. Before I started the game over (w/ the UAP et al), I had Magnus as my 2nd companion, and you're right, voiced characters are a lot of fun. I'm just not sure I want him to be so far behind me in levels at this point, though. Maybe that's an incentive to play again as a tech-oriented PC.

I'm playing as a good-aligned PC, so maybe Chukka makes the most sense for this playthrough.

Thanks again.

You're very welcome. Just be aware that Bates, like everyone else in Arcanum, has his own particular set of prejudices. For instance, whenever I play as a Gnome, I can never unlock the option where he offers me Chukka's services, despite apparently qualifying in every other way (alignment, dialogue, selling him back the ring). I suspect that Half-Orcs and/or Half-Ogres might have a hard time of it as well.
