Good day,

I'm posting here because I'm not sure how to go about this game.

I bought this game (my first purchase on GOG) because it was on sale, but didn't notice that it was compatible specifically with Windows XP and Vista, so I'm wondering... can I run the game in Windows 7?

The computer I'm using is three days old, as I just built it, but now I'm afraid I used up some money to buy a game I can't play.

That said, besides this potential issue, I would also like to know if there's anything in particular I should do to make the game run smoothly on Windows 7, if it is possible. Can anyone direct me to any tips or tricks for running and playing the game?

Thank you!

I am new to Arcanum myself having only bought it yesterday. There are plenty of good resources available on this forum to help and guide you as they did me, especially about some of the unofficial patch resources. I haven't had a problem since this thread on my vista laptop

It runs on most Win 7 system with the 64 bit version being the most difficult to configure.

****Standard things to confirm*******

If running Win 7 / Vista - Did you ...

install as an administrator? (right-click the setup.exe and click "Run as an administrator" in the resulting dialog.
turn UAC off before installing? (see attached image) Set to "Never" notify or uncheck in Vista
install in a directory outside of Program Files?
right click the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and check mark "Run this program as an administrator"?
try using different compatibility modes, starting with the newest and working back to the oldest?
install all mods as an administrator?
try re-running (as an admin) the HighRes.bat located in the Arcanum install directory . . . trying different resolutions. That failing, run the HighRes.bat (as an admin) and uninstall / reinstall the HighRes mod.

If you decide to reinstall the game make sure you uninstall it first and delete all files and directories under GOG.com\Arcanum before reinstalling. Also make a backup of your saves first. (see image)

Edit : Make sure you add the -no3d -doublebuffer switches (see images)

Thanks for the checklist.

Am installing now outside of Program Files folder. And will try the things you said. :) Will post again if I come across issues. :)

Tried all of this, game still goes to a black full-screen window, I get a bleat of sound, then it auto-minimizes itself down to the taskbar and there it sits forevermore.

I have this problem with, come to think of it, damned near everything I get from GOG. You'd think I'd learn eventually, but I was hoping I could get Arcanum on the go.

Win7 64-bit.
Installed the game to my D drive, so not in C:\Program Files\
*sighs* It's been HOW LONG and GOG still can't figure out UAC? I shall give this a try.
Compat tab has been set to Run As Admin
All compat modes give the same result.
No mods installed. Fresh, virgin, straight from GOG install.

Hi Redhawk, I haven't played Arcanum since Oct of last year so I'm sorta rusty on this one now. Did you install the high res mod? If you did and you did not right click the HiRes.bat to install . . the mod probably did not install correctly.

Uninstall it and re-install by right clicking the HiRes.bat file (should be located in the install directory) and click "Run as an administrator" on the resulting dialog. Follow the on screen prompts to uninstall / reinstall. There was some problems with the hi-res mod that had some of the same things you described.

Look here for info on uninstalling the high res mod.

You might start a new question thread as there are many knowledgeable community members who monitor this forum. They should be more able to give you some info, if not post back and I will try to find my old threads about the high res mod. . . =)

Edit : Make sure you used the shortcut switches correctly as they helped the game on most systems ( see attached for example )

Edit: Added name of hi-res install / uninstall file for clarity (HiRes.bat)

Can we get some of your hardware specs? Are you running on a netbook by any chance? This sounds like it's a video issue with running fullscreen, and some netbooks have too low of a resolution to display certain games. Arcanum wants to run at 800x600 and can crap out if your display is less than that. Since you say it's happened for other GOG games I wonder if this is the issue.

HOWEVER, this can usually be fixed... check this thread, particularly the post by Namur:

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura/arcanum_not_installing_on_an_hp_mini_110

If your display is high enough resolution, did you try the adding the -no3d and -doublebuffer lines to the target field of the shortcut as Stuff suggested? Those could help.

I know this is marked as "Solved" but figured I'd put my two cents in anyway.
I'm running Windows 7 64bit and just finished my 1st playthrough with no problems and no system tweaks needed. Also didn't use any Mods...I usually like to play a game "Vanilla" first and then add Mods as I see the neccessity.

Enjoy! The Game is quite unusual and a lot of fun IMO.
