I'm up to the Tarant where I'm finding the Schuylers and my companions are Virgil and Magnus. The traps in the basement have hurt Magnus a bit and I've tried healing him with basic healing potions but they only seem to heal 2 hp on him. I've tried resting for days on end to no avail either. Is there a way to detect traps? I know there is a disarm trap skill but it doesn't seem like it would work for that.

A couple things:
Magnus is not easily healed with normal healing potions (or Virgil's healing magic probably) because Magnus is a technologically aligned character. That means that magical items and spells (like potions or a heal spell) don't work as well on him. The equivalent of healing potions for technology are healing salves (you can buy them in shops). You could also buy bandages and give them to Virgil to use with his heal skill (which he'll do automatically, like he does with the heal spell).

To restore health while resting you have to be able to actually rest and not just "wait." This means that you can't rest in the street of cities (when you go to the advance time button there won't be an option for "Rest until Healed"). Most places in the wilderness you can rest and regain health. A quick way to check (without clicking any things on the UI) is if the map icon is the blue globe, if it is then you can rest and heal, if it isn't you (probably) can't.

There is the Spot Trap skill in the Thieving skills branch. It relies on perception. There is also a spell called Sense Invisible (in the Divination spell tree) that gives you full ranks of Spot Traps. You can buy Sense Invisible spell scrolls from the magical vendors in Tarant (and sometimes Wise Women). You can also build a technological device (the Flow Spectrometer) in the Electrical college which when equipped detects traps (but it uses batteries - I think taking one battery for every trap detected. Or something like that...)

To be able to disarm traps you need both the disarm skill and something to detect the traps.

Hope all of that helps!
