Hi, I don't have windows 10 but seeing how it's crashing at times on 7 I would believe 10 might have similar issues.

As for windowed mode, it doesn't support it. I poked around in the file and didn't see it and an online search gave me this: http://www.anno-zone.de/forum/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=4025 sorry it doesn't!

Okay thanks, I'll pass this game (Wonder why its advertised to be compatible with Windows 10 when it isn't, not that smart from GOG).

Probably a little early from them to tag it as 10 compatible but I'm confident it will be. I just wouldn't trust anything that is 10 compatible for a few weeks until kinks get worked out.

You can use DXwrapper to force the game into windowed mode. (win 8.1 here)
It can also scale up the window to be more fitting for high res screens while still retaining the UI and game proportions.

Same issue here, I haven't found a solution yet.
However it works fine in a virtual machine running XP.

Edit: I've found out that several of my older games didn't start but generated this error message. According to various web sites it is difficult to find a reason, it might be caused by a hardware driver, corrupted system files, problems with Windows Update, UAC, Antivirus-Software, or even malware.
Instead of losing hours searching for the reason it was easier to perform a clean install of Windows 10 (which is possible after the upgrade from a previous version). Problems are gone, Anno 1602 and most of the old games run very well now.

Apart from surprisingly few games which are incompatible with Windows 10 you should be aware that executables of safedisc-protected CD games won't run. Only options in these cases are to find a copy without this protection or usage of another OS (dual boot or VM).

Edit #2: Starting from a clean Windows 10 install has led me to the solution of the Error message 0xc0000022.
When starting a few older games for the first time Windows will ask you to activate "DPLAY". I remember having done that 2-3 years ago on Windows 8.1. When upgrading to Windows 10, DPLAY will be deactivated, but due to a registry entry which isn't reverted back you won't be asked to activate it again.

SOLUTION: Go to Control Panel => Programs => Programs and Features => Turn Windows features on or off and select "DPLAY" (Legacy).

After a few seconds Anno 1602 and quite a few good old games will run again. The error message "0xc0000022" is correct (access to a few Legacy DLLs is missing) but all the troubleshooting steps you find on various sites (including MS-KB) are quite misleading.

I had no issues on my Windows 7 installation (fully updated). Upgraded to Win10, runs fine too. There is no windowed mode.

Can your provide a link for DXwrapper, please? There are several applications out there containing "dxwrapper", mostly wrappers for OpenGL to DirectX etc.

@Ironvos

Thanks for posting the link. It's never too late for such a nice game. :)

I can't seem to get it to open in a window with DXwnd. Are you using a specific version? What do your settings look like?

Thanks,
I figured out how to get this to work on Windows 10:

1. go into Control Panel
2. Select "Programs"
3. Select "Turn Windows Features On or Off"
4. Check the box "Legacy Components" and click OK
5. Close Control panel
6. Go to the folder where the game file is
7. Right click on the "1602 A.D." file
8. Select Properties
9. Go to the Compatibility Tab
10. Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
11. Select "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)"
12. check "Reduce color mode"
13. Select "8-bit (256) color)"
14. Click ok
15. Run the game and it should work now.

Hope this helps everyone.
