I seem to be having a problem training my party in close combat.

Tom is not maxed out, but the trainer on Gratogel states 'There is nothing further I can teach you'. (same for all the other m,embers of the party)

I thought maybe I'd maxed out the training for that island, but even on Maini I'm getting the same result with the trainer at Kounos.

I have sufficient money to pay for training

Tom has 12 points to spend and is currently 71/80 in close combat

Thanks in advance

Some of the stronger armour-types, shields, and non-magical close combat weapons reduce the effective combat stats of your characters. That's probably what you are seeing. Just remove the equipment of your characters and you'll see their actual stats.
Thanks for the reply, but I'm talking about the fact that the trainer wont train me. My stats are not maxed out yet. I thought that may have been the case, but sadly not as removing all equipment results in the same thing, no training
Just to reiterate, the stats of your characters really are not maxed out. It doesn't just look that way due to the equipment. You also have enough training points and money, yet the trainers are unwilling to train you.

That's baffling to say the least. I've never run into such a situation. Whether with the original version or the one from GOG.

Could you perhaps upload the savegame? I can't give you any guarantees, but maybe I can figure out what is going on.
Thanks for the very kind offer. I'll try an older save game and see if that has any effect

The way you worded your post made it sound like you removed the equipment and then talked to the trainer, expecting him to train you now. That's not what Gaunathor was trying to tell you. When you remove your equipment, your supposed to check the stat you were trying to train. It should already be maxed out.
If that's not the case upload you savegame. I'll have a look at it.

Once I went through the next dungeon and went back to the trainer everything was fine. Some sort of glitch, whether it's been seen before or not!

Time to tackle the next dungeon
Just to clarify this for you, you have to earn the skill points before you can receive further combat training. You get more skill points by leveling up further. You can see whether you have skill points to use by looking on the character sheet.

Thought I would post this in case anyone else has the same question.

The reason it worked when you returned from the dungeon is because you probably leveled up a few times whilst there and accumulated more skill points.
It's nice to see so helpful community :)

And all the replies here did cover all three main points:
1) actual / max Close Range Combat value (actual < max)
2) heavy weapons, heavy armor, decreases your actual CRC, so despite you see 60/80, your actual CRC might as well be 80/80 (in the inventory you have to remove all weapons and armor, to see your real skill value)
3) skill points -> you must have them, in order to be trained (you get them each level-up, if you used them already on training)
