The first time I've ever played Another World was on my 486, I remember I booted up the game and wow, I was so shocked at how "cinematic" it felt, it looked and played like an animated sci-fi movie, fluid animations, always unique enemies, action puzzles... I remember it was the first game I've ever played that needed you to actually run away from the beast at the end... full review of the first level instead of just shooting the hell out of your enemies. The world around Lester felt more alive than every game I've ever played before and Lester himself was a true human, not some sort of pumped superdude with a shotgun.
Smooth animations like I was never able to see from Prince of Persia times, glorious and fascinating graphics, rapid action sequences and an hard yet satisfying gameplay.
When I played this remade version for the first time I had a similar feeling, It wasn't something new, I've played this game dozen of times during years, but the sharp vector graphics i was able too see as child on my old crt monitor looked pixelly on my new 23" LCD, this restyle reminds me more than the original version how I used to look at this game, I know it may sound strange but it's true.
And yay, no more passwords to remember :)
This game made my childhood and it's one of the best games EVER.
Another World is one of those rare games that you play every single year. It's longevity is not due the gameplay, the story, the graphics or the music, it's about the atmosphere and the experience.... full review
From the amazing intro all the way to the end of Lester's, or dare I say the player's, journey in this alien world this is one hell of a ride. And don't dismiss these words as just a rambling of a fan boy, Hideo Kojima (of Metal Gear Solid fame), Fumito Ueda (Ico) and Goichi Suda (Killer 7, No More Heroes) all agree with me.
When the original Another World came out I only had to chance to play it late after school, before extracurricular computer class. This game (and Spacequest II and a polish game called Electrobody) is what hooked me on PC gaming.... full review
The graphics were amazing in the original and this version only improves on them. While no longer the technical bleeding-edge nobody should be disappointed by the visuals. There is lots of beautifully detailed backgrounds, great character animations and some nice effects.
The game play itself is fast-paced and requires quick thinking and even quicker reflexes so expect to die a lot. Fortunately this improved version has a lot more "save-codes" than the classic one, so dying is not that harsh and time-consuming.
Make no mistake, this is not a typical platformer featuring obese plumbers - most of the time you will be running from dangerous things, running into even more dangerous things and generally fighting for your survival.
The story of this game is also nice, although it does not get much exposition - no long and unskipable cut scenes here. Still, the events that play out may easily make you care about the protagonist and character(s) you meet. This game has one of the best and most emotional endings in the whole genre.
Sounds and music is excellent and greatly help the player to get into the right mood and state of mind for this game.
