Windows 8 Tile Icons
This is totally possible (for Medium 150x150 and Small 70x70 tile sizes). msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/dn393983.aspx
I was able to use that guide to make some basic (unscaled, no high-contrast) tiles for HOMM3 and Total Annihilation. imgur.com/VnWYVMP
Live Tiles aren't necessary; just make available game tiles at high resolution and the proper aspect ratio for Windows 8 (wide tiles that will scale down to 248:120 and can be cropped to a square shape).
From what I know, Live Tiles aren't accessible to apps that haven't come from the Windows Store so this isn't possible for GOG to make within games. It isn't entirely impossible, but it would require some workaround or an app like Pin Steam.
I would still love this though!
No.
Windows 8 needs to die in a fire. Slow and horrible. There absolutely needs no support for it.
OK...I know this is more difficult than writing for Win7, but one easy idea would be to create a free metro app that links to the GOG installer program similar to Pin Steam. I agree Linux support would be nice, but --A. they are already supposed to support Windows 8 and --B. Get your own survey
OblyTile.
Instead, file a wish with Microsoft to make the tile icons useful for users and developers, instead of useful for the Microsoft store. This is a Microsoft-imposed limitation.
No. Support Linux before Windows 8 UI.
This is harder than people realize. By default, Windows 8 does not allow non-Modern UI applications to create live tiles that link directly to an application. Applications that do create tiles most often use a workaround: they register a new protocol in Windows and the installed program is linked to the protocol, similar to how Steam creates desktop shortcuts. While this method technically works, these tiles lose out on pretty much all of the functionality of the Start Screen.
