Please don't add region locked games/movies to the catalog
Blazing Chrome region locked in Asia :(
I'm just another victim of this unfortunate change on GOG.
Of course GOG is not solely to blame. My country's politics also play a dominant part in this development.
But as some other people already mentioned on the Forum: I'd rather have a website, primarely focused on the English-speaking market, than a multi-national service with restrictions for certain countries.
And sadly evading via VPN does not seem to be an option as well. You probably see in what kind of a situation this forces me. In my case it's Quake II and RTCW. Of course I could make the situation much easier, if I'd simply go to dubious websites or a torrent and get the game for "free".
But I actually WANT to pay for these games. And I want them DRM-free from GOG.
Therefore, although it seems unlikely, I hope we will see a solution for this problem at some point in the future.
Either, that my country changes its policies or that GOG accommodates a tiny bit.
Unless it's legally required, no region locking.
If you can't remove regional lockout. at least keep a blind eye on VPN users (I think you are actually doing that). Useful for Australians (Hotline Miami 2) and Germans (Commandos, Quake and Wolfenstein).
o wait sorry wrong type of region locked
i'm pretty sure they don't want it region lock so they can buy cheap games remember 1 doller does not equal 1 Euro
It is disgusting strategy that does NOT work! Facts: People who want it - will get it! Fact: People who want to legally have it - will not get it. And you will miss profits. Fact: People who live in a region are not 100% native proper people - in Russia there are 50% of ethnic Russians, in Europe - big % of Americans, Asians, Africans; and so on. Fact - you block adults from accessing content like from children, content which is not harmful to them, content that they always can omit. Example, I had once a chance to purchase Borderlands from other provider (HB) - and offered 1st version to German region as restricted , whilst 2nd version as unrestricted. Goes without saying that I refused to invest in that childish censorship.
@Gengar78: Actually, I meant more along the following lines:
Dear visitor, we have detected that you are visiting from Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, our takedown-request form is not available in your area. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you.
Sincerely, GOG team.
@ssokolow Well I guess this wish should be re-named "Please don't add region locked games/movies to the catalog unless it's Saudi Arabia we're talking about ;)"
Seriously though, why are we even mad about region locking if we're just going to justify it by decrying said region locked countries. If we go forth with this way of thinking I imagine future conversations we be like:
"Us Germans can't buy Commandos!"
"So?! The 'people who matter®™' aren't complaining, so screw you plebeians!
@Gengar78: I don't think many people (who matter) would complain about region-locking JUST the "request censorship" form. ;P
@DanyKing But then that's region locking...
@Rixasha well then let's lock out those Arabs. Simple as that.
Imagine a game is illegal to sell in Saudi Arabia due to theologically objectionable content, alcohol abuse or risque behaviour. Are you saying that this ban should be expanded to the rest of the world too? We'd have no games left to play.
How about just not checking the customer IP? It used to be that it was the customers own responsibility to state which nation he was from. Now Gog stopped operating on trust and started to crosscheck. First for regional pricing, now for region locking. And yes, region locking is a form of DRM, so GOG betrayed it's own roots here!
So what you are suggesting is that if 1 country in the world would legally ban some video games, then GOG should effectively expand this censorship worldwide into all customers? This is a mind boggling principle.
Sorry dude, but this situation should be addressed by law makers and governments people have chosen. Don't require GOG to punish customers and developers - I want to buy my games in Poland DRM-free and I refuse to be punished because Australians selected lawmakers that accept censorship (Hotline Miami 2 case).
Damn..... www.gog.com/game/hotline_miami_2_wrong_number
Whoops, didn't notice this: (but then again, this wish talks about games as well)
www.gog.com/wishlist/movies/nay_to_more_big_movies_which_would_introduce_region_locks
Agreed. I would further state "available to everyone at the same price".
