The GOG downloader is supposed to be optional too - but if you ever post an issue to support regarding download problems, even when the problem is [url:[url=http://www.gog.com/forum/general/coming_soon_divinity_original_sin/post422]clearly] at GOG's end[/url] you will still have them saying "Use the downloader!" rather than "Thanks, we'll fix the problem".
This is one likely scenario with Galaxy - anyone encountering problems due to an outdated version will be told to install Galaxy to get the latest update, rather than pushing GOG to provide an updated download.

A "game client" is a program which primarily advocates DRM and copy protection in all its modern, needlessly online necessitating forms, i.e. online activation, "achievements" and assorted other bogus virtual rewards, day one patches, day one DLC, constant in client updates etc. These are all virtual "advantages" pirates do not have, so they’re highly effective copy protection mechanisms.
Developers love a game client because it facilitates post release updates and DLC, hence an incomplete and faulty product can be delivered with the highest chance of customer acceptance.
Players seem to accept this program nowadays because about 30 kilobytes of that client offer them concise functions to organize the wealth of cheaply bought games which they never play in order to find the few they actually do want to play.
Thank God that damn thing will be optional. :(
AstralWanderer Problems that Galaxy could cause for non-users:
*Developers neglecting to provide downloadable updates in favour of Galaxy's auto-updates.
*Developers providing content that is only accessible via Galaxy (mods, scenarios, etc).
*Time spent by GOG developing and supporting Galaxy is time taken away from negotiating new content, providing game updates and communicating with customers.
*Galaxy presents a security risk, as does any auto-updater - GOG will need to spend extra time dealing with exploits and security advisories and it will likely make GOG a more attractive target for crackers (Steam itself was compromised in November 2011 and still doesn't know who was responsible).
*Multiplayer software has to be able to counter online cheating. GOG will need to allocate further support to stay ahead of developments here - many of which may pose privacy and security risks to those using it (Valve's VAC has been accused of tracking websites visited and Punkbuster blacklists a wide range of security software).

If you fear the client will be mandatory then tell us. Tell us why they should "Never" add one.
I would like to have an optional client and I am sure many new users will like to have one because they are accustomed to steam-like clients.
Am I making a mistake if I wish for an OPTIONAL client? If so then someone PLEASE TELL ME WHY.
