Good old games on android
I want this too, folks, but as soon as GOG partnered with Microsoft, what meager support there used to be for the rival format, Android, evaporated. Microsoft has apparently strongarmed GOG into it, as they do with their other partners. Pray they don't alter the deal further. This deal's getting worse, all the time....
Very important storage issue: all games must be able to use the external SD card. All games must be able to use the EXTERNAL storage Android/data/obb and Android/data/gamefiles folders. It's best if apps download their data themselves, and we choose the download storage. This is crucial. By default, almost all apps/games put the obb files on the internal storage, and use the internal storage for data files in Android/data folders. Most games don't allow moving any files to the external SD card, but there are rare exceptions. With games like Icewind Dale, many users don't have internal storage space to get the game in the first place, and the Neverwinter Nights port has even bigger data files! And they all download only to the internal storage, no questions asked!
I always avoided DOS games, but World Rally Fever changed my attitude towards DOS games for good. I never knew there were such great games for DOS, and there are other - I got some freeware in the past and now I'll give them a go as well! I started to play on Windows 95 and thought that anything older is too simplistic, but this game proves it more than anything that DOS games can be serious games. I also played a little Aliens vs Predator for DOS and thought it was also quite good, I'll have to get back to it! Would be nice to buy all these here, nicely prepared to run on Linux, Android, Windows and Mac, all DRM free - which is a huge technical advantage when using cracks, mods or configuring manually the game. Steam games are very limited in this, so DRM free games are the only good way to keep the game running in the future.
World Rally Fever runs fine on my Android phone and tablet! Just place the WRF.DAT and WRF.GOG files in you C drive folder and use imgmount d WRF.DAT -t iso, then run RALLY.EXE. I have particular success with aFreebox by Fishstix and in particular Magic DosBox by bruenor, where you can create game profiles to run the whole procedure automatically - just rename WRF.DAT to WRF.CUE and WRF.GOG to WRF.BIN for the app to recognize and use them. Full blown gamepad support any way I want. Only sound effects don't work, but it's a minor issue, music runs fine, graphics run good. Really fun! Thanks GOG!
For couple of weeks I've been using Magic Dosbox app on Android. It would be great if GOG packaged old DOS games, configured them properly and given them on-screen buttons similar to Magic Dosbox. Then they could distribute it on Google Play as playable DOS games. I understand that many games wouldn't be suitable because they use a lot of controls but many games would be perfectly playable.
That would require an incredible amount of curating. First of all: reject about 99% of offers because they fail to meet a proper quality standard. Secondly: exclude games with in-app sales and games that still display ads in spite of having bought the game.
Some games do appear on android as well as other systems. Not by 3th party, but by the developers them self. (e.g. Braveland: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tortugateam.braveland.v2 ).
So it would be nice to have them on GOG as well.
GOG can always wait to see if this feature is successful, and if so, add support for dosbox (and possibly other games) on Android.
I actually know of a guy making a Settlers I remake for Android... So why shouldn't I vote this? Voted. :)
This would be a great idea. It would be great if the Android version included the PC one and viceversa, but I wouldn't mind buying a few select Android versions were that not to be the case.
