GOG's own VPN client to facilitate multiplayer between members
A program like hamachi can be used to set up multiplayer games, for any LAN game - but a service for gog users, enabling multiplayer > that would be neat
This is something I want most.
I dont mind if it is realised exactly this way. But a special tool provided by gog to make old games multiplayer work easy would be very nice.
This could be extended with some kind of NAT-neg-Service for simply seetting up Direct-IP-Connections without firewall and router setup hazzle.
All kinds of security risks. Such technology should not be made available to people who can't set it up between them on their own. It would be irresponsible for GOG to offer such a feature. Also, I don't want GOG to become Steam.
Guilty Gear XX Reloaded uses a custom fan-made netlink that works on any version (GoG, Steam or CD). Would be VERY GOOD if GoG implemented this officially with the game like they did with Aliens vs Predator. A lot of people who plays fighting games online would come to play.
in contrast to some other comment i think this should not be limited to people who already bought on gog. this way new people will be introduced to gog, an next to every multiplayer game listed in this service you'd have a button like "buy for 5.99". i can imagine this would be a great marketing instrument.
i had to install GameRanger to play total annihilation in my local lan.
i thought wouldnt it be easy for gog to have something like that themselves? they have to fiddle with the games anyway to check compatibility and get them running. add a bit more fiddling and you have a working network configuration for your own GameRanger-like service.
Gave this some more thought after my previous comment, and I have to say that, if done right, this could be an amazing GOG.com-exclusive added service. I expect that a generalized system could be used for any game--past, present, and future--that features LAN-based multiplayer. Maybe in addition to or in place of the friends list, the client could be an IRC-like chat program that doubles as a VPN client, with different chat channels for different game series, mirroring the structure of the GOG.com forums.
I really don't know how such a system would or could work, technically speaking, but I'd like to think that, if a server-side system were to handle global chat and facilitate the initial handshake between users, it could hand off management of some form of temporary mesh networks to the client-side software and, I hope, take most of the burden off of GOG.com.
This sort of system could be used to solve about the most glaring issue a lot of people have with multiplayer in GOG.com copies of Divinity: Dragon Commander.
This would make playing I Don't know Every single game on GOG better. Think about it. They have a large number of games that contain multiplayer. Its perfect. We could set up our own communities like the games just were released
I wish i could support this more then once
This could be one of the best applications I'll ever use. Imagine how big these games will be again after fellow Bloodites or Duker's find this out. Maybe we will also attract new players who haven't played them back in the day, and now realize that these are the best games ever. I'm all in for this.
I would also suggest that this would include a game lobby mechanism for older games that were designed around a peer client connections, like Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem, and Blood.
This is an absolutely wonderful idea. I would (personally) even be willing to pay a nominal subscription fee in order to access similar VPN services on a permanent basis (i.e. not dependent on active player count, so you can host a game and wait for players to join). Honestly though, I'm down with anything that grants multiplayer capabilities to my "Good Old Games".
